Our clients are stuck between three interior door colors, and honestly, I get it.

1. White
2. Iron Ore
3. Accessible Beige

Doors don't seem like a big decision until you realize there are about twenty of them in the house. Every one of them changes how a room feels.

White keeps it clean and classic. Iron Ore brings contrast and a little edge. Accessible Beige warms everything up without getting loud.

Before any client commits to the trendiest design they saw online, I ask one question.

Is this still going to look right in fifteen years?

Rooflines, angles, and exterior details are permanent. You can't paint over them when the trend moves on.

That's why I steer clients toward a timeless look. Enough character to have personality, without going so far that it becomes a problem in year ten.

The homes that age best are the ones you can update without moving walls. That's what we build.

Most people fall in love with a piece of land before they ask the right questions. By the time the problems show up, the money is already on the table.

Floodplains the seller didn't mention. Clay soil that won't support a traditional septic system. Setbacks that shrink your buildable area. A county that requires $5,000 in engineering before you can bring in a single load of fill dirt.

Want to break ground on your custom home next spring? The clock is already running.

Floor plans take at least two months, usually more. A good designer can't be rushed, and you don't want them to be.

Financing is the other piece. Getting in front of your lender now means no surprises when it's time to move.

There is something about building in Central Iowa that does not get talked about enough.

You get the quiet. The space. The land. Neighbors you actually know from baseball and Friday night games.

And when you need the city, Des Moines is right there.

A lot of the families we build for are not moving away from something. They are moving toward the life they actually want. A piece of land. A home built exactly the way they want to live. Room to breathe.

Nine to twelve months sounds like a long time until you understand what goes into doing it right.

One framing crew. One HVAC crew. People I trust completely who take their time on every phase. No rushing to hit a deadline. No cutting corners to move on to the next job.

The houses that go up in four months are the ones where you find problems in year one. The subfloor that got rushed during a wet week. The insulation that was not given time to set properly. The trim that was slapped on because the builder was already thinking about his next project.

We do not work that way. And the families who build with us are glad we do not.

People ask me why I prefer building custom over remodels and additions. Here is the honest answer.

When I build a custom home, I have access to everything. If a client changes their mind, we can adjust. We do not have to tear apart walls that are already finished or work around a structure that was not designed for what they want.

And from a cost perspective, a custom home done right is the best money you will spend per square foot. You are not paying someone to undo and redo existing work. You are building exactly what you want from the ground up.

A remodel or addition can absolutely make sense in certain situations. But when someone asks me what I would do if it were my money, the answer is almost always the same.

Build new.

I still drive through neighborhoods where I built houses years ago.

Not because I have to. Because I want to see them.

And what I have learned from doing this for fifteen years is that the houses we slowed down on, the ones where we did not rush a single phase, where we used the right materials and had honest conversations about every decision, those are the houses that still look like they were just built.

That is what keeps me from cutting corners. Not reviews. Not referrals. Knowing I am going to drive past that house for the rest of my life, and I need to be proud of what I see.
