Spring is near!!!
There are several factors to always check out when hiring a designer/ contractor. Here is a short list of items to look for:

1. Make sure the designer understands city codes. Example: what distance should a wood fire pit be from a structure (house/ pergola)? Or can you plant or build into a D&U easement?

2. Get proper permits needed, which is different then HOA approval. Example: job progress can be stopped or slowed without the proper encroachment permit.

3. Have proper insurance. Example: Property owners could be open to certain liability if the contractor isn’t insured.

4. Have a degree in Landscape Architecture or horticulture. This will typically ensure all bases of your new space are well thought out. Example: a designer can understand the needs of a project to make sure the project has proper elements of grade /elevation changes, drainage, how spaces connect/ functionality, as well as overall aesthetics.

Following the above items as well as your own checklist will help in creating a unique space to enjoy and most importantly protects your home/ family.

A before and after showing simple modifications. A good way of creating a welcoming entry and sense of space is to extend and soften the planting bed with a smooth flowing curve. Plant choice is another item to pay attention to as sometimes the builder package planting can us a bland or wrong plant material. Plant choices with various seasonal interest help create a welcome entrance throughout the year.
This entrance reused the builder boxwoods and added iris, hydrangea, dwarf grass and a few additional accents.

A favorite backyard space. This is complete with a 5 hole putting green, raised gardens, bubbling boulder, fire pit, dry stream, accent lighting, and texture/ seasonal interest with the plant material.
