Reduce the Risk of Damage on Your Property
Before winter, we'd like to offer to check your trees for any visibly hazardous conditions or structural issues that could result in damage.
When there is a hanging branch or crack in a tree, it's easy to see that a problem exists.
Other issues may be more difficult to detect and could be putting your trees at risk of failure.
Simple solutions can make a big difference. For example, pruning can lessen branch weight and wind resistance.
Installation of structural supports, including cables and brace rods, can also be effective in limiting branch movement and protecting trees.
While it is impossible to predict the outcome of a specific tree, regular maintenance can help reduce the risk of damage to your property this winter.

Tree Tips...
Preparing your trees and shrubs for winter
Extreme weather events and changing climate conditions result in chronic stress to our woody plants. In many areas, we have seen decline and death of even well-established mature trees. Here are suggestions to promote the health of trees and shrubs, and to protect them from temperature extremes.
Apply and maintain a 2- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch at the base of woody plants, extending out to the drip line if possible. Wood chips are one of the best materials to use. The combination of leaves, twigs, bark and wood is similar to the natural mulch found in a forest setting. This layer of mulch allows water pe*******on and decreases evaporation, and protects roots from extreme temperature changes. Mulch should be left to decompose in place rather than removing and replacing with new mulch each year.
Providing water during drought is very important. Trees and shrubs, especially evergreens, are at a great disadvantage going into the winter months, suffering drought stress. Be sure to continue irrigation until cold temperatures arrive.
Ask your Bartlett Arborist Representative to sample your soil for nutrient content and pH level. Fertilize only if your soils are nutrient deficient. Adjusting soil pH may be necessary to improve availability of some nutrients. Multiple treatments may be needed to make adjustments in soil pH. Fall is the perfect time to begin these services. Did you know that thousands of landscape trees are damaged or destroyed by lightning each year?
When lightning strikes a tree, it can cause severe structural damage, create safety hazards, and even lead to the loss of valuable trees that have taken decades to grow. Species such as oak, maple, pine, spruce, ash, tulip poplar, and others can be particularly vulnerable.
Fortunately, lightning protection systems can help reduce the risk. These professionally installed systems provide a low-resistance path for electrical energy to safely travel from the tree to the ground, helping to protect the tree from significant damage.
Your trees are an important part of your property's beauty, environmental benefits, and overall value. Taking proactive steps to protect them before storm season can help preserve these valuable landscape assets for years to come.
💡 Healthy, protected trees make for safer and more resilient landscapes.
