The best design details aren't always the most extravagant ones. They're the ones that make your home work better for you every single day.

Our team is always looking for the small moments that make a remodel feel made for the family living in it and adding in details like these are one of the ways we do it.

Here are a few of our COO Justin's favorites (out of about a hundred):

A fluted stone backsplash that turned a would-be seam into a feature
A custom steel café door leading into the scullery
Chilled, filtered water on tap, so the kids can fill their water bottles
Wallpaper in the powder bath that (yes) has eyes in it

Which one would you steal for your own home?

And should we share more?? (Justin has plenty.)

This Kitchen & Mudroom remodel is such a great example of what is possible when our crayons are sharp, our glue bottle is topped off and our hard hats are strapped on tight.

The original kitchen had plenty of space but not much flow. Heavy cherry cabinetry and travertine floors made it feel too dark, and it didn't connect well to the rooms the family actually gathers in.

Our team rebuilt the kitchen layout around one strong focal point: an arched range alcove, finished in textured Roman clay, with natural stone behind the range.

But that stone also created a challenge. The slab needed a seam right behind the range, where everyone would see it. Instead of trying to hide it, we designed it into a feature: a 1.5" fluted detail that Olympia Stone brought in new tooling to fabricate.

A few more choices we love that bring calm and balance to this space:
-Walnut lower cabinetry paired with painted uppers
-Warm brass hardware throughout: pulls, faucet, and pendants
-Smaller can lights and speakers for a quieter ceiling
-A custom steel café door on one side of the range wall, matched by a steel patio door on the other

And one of our final favorite features of this space is the custom steel café door that leads into one of the hardest-working rooms in the house. More on that next week. 👀

Swipe to see the design drawing next to the finished space. It all started with an idea paper.

Home is the place that holds us.

This family wasn't sure if their next step was to remodel, build, or buy.

Then a home listing landed in their texts: a Zionsville home with the kind of old-world charm that's nearly impossible to recreate today.

They were excited about what it could become, and nervous too.

They'd never taken on a renovation before, so they went looking for a partner who knew the art of preserving the character of something that already exists, and who had a built-in team of partners to make what they pictured come to life.

We walked the house with them before they made an offer. Seven months of construction later, they moved in ahead of their deadline and within 1% of their budget.

This is the Willow Ridge Remodel, and it's only the beginning of the story.

Watch the full video on our website (link in bio), and follow along this month as we share the house room by room.

Thinking about buying a home with renovation in mind? Send us a message. We'd love to help.

If you start a project with Custom Living, one of the first people you may meet from our team is Allison.

Allison Copeland is a Senior Architectural Designer and she adds value and creativity everywhere she goes:

She splits her time between leading design, coordinating with our team and trade partners, and making sure every plan, detail, budget, and timeline is on track from first sketch to final walkthrough.

We asked her what she loves most about her role and here’s what she had to say:

“There's something incredibly rewarding about taking a client's ideas, turning them into a design, and ultimately seeing the finished space come to life."

When she's not at the drafting table or on a jobsite, you'll find her in the stands. Allison never misses a chance to cheer on her favorite teams (Indiana Fever + IndyEleven) and she's always up for a game day.

Help us give Allison some heartfelt appreciation in the comments and tell us…

Who are you cheering for this season?

A countertop does a lot more than hold your coffee.

It sets the tone for the whole room, and there's no single right answer.

Here are a few favorites from recent projects, and how different each one feels.
Some keep it light and quiet, like a soft white surface that lets a navy island and brass pendants take the spotlight.

Others go dark and dramatic, with bold veining that turns an island into the centerpiece of the kitchen.
Some choices come down to finish. A subtle, low-sheen surface reads calm and timeless, while dramatic movement adds instant character.

The best choice is the one that fits how you live, how much upkeep you want, and the feeling you want to walk into every day.

That's exactly the conversation our design team loves to have with our clients.

Which one would you choose: light, dark, or somewhere in between?

Tell us your favorite in the comments, and save this post for your next kitchen or countertop project.

We often use millwork and molding to tell a story, to create an experience that adds to the emotion you feel when walk into a room or through a home.

It can elevate a space and give it more grandeur, or it can be used to make a space feel more cozy and welcoming.

Which version speaks to you?

Meet Camilla, our Interior Design Manager at Custom Living.

No two days look the same for her. One minute Camilla might be reviewing selections and renderings, and the next she's collaborating with our construction team or meeting with clients, all in pursuit of getting the design details right.

Her favorite part of the job is watching a design go from an idea on paper to a space a family actually gets to live in. Of course, she also loves leading and developing our talented design team.

Fun fact: Camilla is a huge Chiefs fan on a mission to visit every NFL stadium… 8 down, 22 to go. 🏈

We're lucky to have her design eye (and her energy!!) on every project.
