Why is Spring the perfect time to plan your construction projects?

There are several reasons why Spring is such a great time to start all types of projects, in and outside of the home, and building and renovating are certainly no exception! But why is it so widely recommended to start in the Spring? Let’s take a closer look at why it’s the perfect time of year.

Weather:

Starting a project in Winter isn’t ideal due to the cold, wet, and sometimes harsh weather conditions that are unfortunately all too prevalent in Indiana. These conditions make it difficult for your builders, who have to work in the wet and cold. But, it’s also not ideal for you as the homeowner, especially if your construction project leaves parts of your home open to the elements with just a tarpaulin to shield you from the elements! Nothing is worse than having to endure a freezing winter in a house that’s not fully closed in and insulated. If you don’t want to do this, you then face the prospect of having to temporarily move house, which is an expense that many families try to avoid if possible.

If you start building in the Spring, the weather is getting warmer and fairer, and definitely presents less of an issue when it comes to the practicality and logistics of your construction projects.

Days get longer:

In Spring, the sunlight hours stretch out, so the sun isn’t setting until past 7pm, even as we progress through March! So, you have a lot more available hours in the day to get things done. For example, if you’re running behind schedule, it’s easier for your builders to work later in order to get things back on track. And, you don’t need to worry about it going dark early and general progress on your project being slow.

Give yourself time to get things done:

You may be thinking that Summer would actually be the peak time to start your construction projects, as the weather is even warmer and the days are longer than in Spring. However, we wouldn’t recommend doing this if you can avoid it, unless your project is very small. This is because many construction projects take weeks or even months to complete, and you also need to account for them running over schedule too. So, in order to get them done before the cold and dark of Winter sets in again, it’s a good idea to start as soon as possible once the weather allows. So, by starting in Spring instead of Summer, you’re giving yourself lots of time to get your construction done before the seasons change.

Book in advance:

It is vital that you start booking early so that you get in before the rush. This will also ensure that your project is one of the first in line for them, so you can actually get started on schedule in the Spring and don’t have to risk starting later on and the project spilling over.

What Home Improvements Add the Most Value?

Home Improvements That Add Value
Kitchen Improvements
If adding value to your home is the goal, the kitchen is likely the place to start. Conventional wisdom says kitchens and bathrooms sell houses. How much will a new kitchen increase the value of your home? According to Zillow, kitchen renovations provide up to 80% return on investment. Depending on how you choose to renovate, you could get more or less back from this investment.

Bathrooms Improvements
Updated bathrooms are key for adding value to your home. When designing a bathroom, keep in mind how many people will use the space on a daily basis. Often, if your home only has one bathroom and multiple bedrooms, adding an additional bathroom to the layout can add value to your home and provide up to 70% return on investment,.

Bathroom remodel mistakes come in many shapes, sizes and colors. Some of the worst bathroom designs aren’t necessarily out-of-style, but they happen when form no longer meets function. A bathroom should serve very specific needs and do so with a nice aesthetic and enjoyable atmosphere.

Starting your bathroom remodel project with a clear plan and a trusted partner can help you foresee and prevent common bathroom remodel mistakes. While colors, textures and style are largely subjective, these are 10 of the most common bathroom remodel mistakes to avoid.

How to Tell if a Wall Is Load Bearing in Your Home??

What Is a Load-Bearing Wall?
Load-bearing, or structural walls, support the ceiling above them and the floor below them. They keep your home intact and are vital to its foundation, unlike regular walls, which often act as room dividers.

How Can I Tell if a Wall Is Load Bearing?

To determine which type of wall you’re working with, look at the structural design of your home. Here are a few terms you need to know to do this:

Joists: Horizontal structures that support the floor and ceiling of your home. You can see floor joists in any unfinished area of your basement and ceiling joists in any unfinished areas of your attic or crawl space.
Beams: Sturdy pieces of wood or metal, which transfer the weight of your home onto the foundation.
Check for columns or posts near the wall. While you may think a column or post at the end of a wall is just for looks, it might help you identify a load-bearing wall.
Check the location of walls above or below the wall in question. If the wall in question is directly above or below a wall on a different level of your home, it’s probably supporting some weight.
Check the foundation. Any walls connecting directly to your foundation are most likely structural walls. This includes any exterior walls or walls that were exterior prior to a home addition. Additionally, any walls that run parallel to the ridge or peak of your roof are probably load bearing.
