Jiaxi, our current planning intern, presented her capstone project to our studio yesterday, called “GIS Beyond Analysis.” She took our core value of Equity to heart with this project, exploring ways in which GIS could be used to create dynamic, interactive zoning maps. She showed us ways that anyone with an internet connection can interact with these maps, allowing residents deeper ways to understand zoning and redevelopment in their areas.

During NYC Climate Week, Rotina Tian explored how design can help cities respond to climate challenges while creating more accessible, connected, and resilient public spaces.

Highlights included:

🌊 The Resilient Public Waterfront: A conversation on integrating climate infrastructure with vibrant public spaces.

🏙️ Community First: An Urban Design Forum discussion on community land trusts, housing, land rights, and the role of community power in shaping cities.

🚤 WEDG® Harbor Tour: A Waterfront Alliance tour of waterfront parks in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Governors Island, exploring resilience, ecological restoration, and equitable public access.

Rotina also spent time exploring parks and public spaces along the Hudson and East Rivers, including Main Street Park in DUMBO (pictured), seeing firsthand how waterfront design shapes the public experience.

From big-picture conversations to built projects, the week offered fresh perspectives on how design can help create more resilient, inclusive, and people-centered cities.

How can investments in landscape architecture deliver economic value for communities? 🌿Monon Boulevard & Midtown Plaza is featured in "Strengthening 'the Economic Case for Nature-Based Solutions," a new report developed through partnership between the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF).

In City of Carmel, Indiana Government's Midtown district, the project integrates green infrastructure, pedestrian and bicycle connections, and inviting public spaces to support a more walkable, connected, and active community. These investments demonstrate how landscape architecture can contribute to economic vitality while delivering environmental and social benefits.

The project’s inclusion builds on research conducted by Purdue Horticulture and Landscape Architecture through the LAF’s Case Study Investigation (CSI) program, helping strengthen the evidence behind the economic value of nature-based solutions.

The report explores how to better measure and communicate the economic value of nature-based solutions, building the evidence communities need to make informed investments in their future.

For more than a century, Old City Park has been a place for community connection in Greenwood. REA worked alongside the City of Greenwood - Mayor Mark W. Myers to reimagine this historic park as a downtown destination that brings recreation, nature, and connectivity together.

The redesigned park works with the site’s natural features, restoring Pleasant Creek’s stream corridor and creating spaces for people to explore, play, and enjoy the outdoors. A central promenade connects a unique playground, pedestrian bridge, event lawn, trails, and game and fitness areas, while native plantings help support habitat.

Old City Park builds on Greenwood’s history while creating new ways for residents to connect with their community, enjoy the outdoors, and experience downtown.

Over several years, REA worked alongside the City of Bloomington, IN and City of Bloomington, IN - Parks and Recreation to transform a former industrial rail site into a vibrant community destination. 🌿

Together, we helped shape a vision for a park that could do more than provide recreation. Switchyard Park brings together play, ecology, and connections to the surrounding community and downtown.

Our approach integrated ecological remediation, floodplain restoration, wetland creation, stormwater management, and native plantings that create habitat, while also creating flexible spaces for people to gather and connect with nature.

Today, the park supports a wide range of activity, from concerts and farmers markets to everyday recreation, while contributing to the economic vitality of the surrounding area.

Switchyard Park is an example of how we can help communities turn challenging sites into places that serve people, ecology, and long-term community goals.

It’s Planning Month! Throughout October, we’re putting the spotlight on our planning team and the people behind the plans, projects, and policies that help shape our communities.

We’re continuing our series with another perspective on what it means to plan in the public interest.

Cynthia Bowen, Partner and Planner, sees planning in the public interest as a responsibility to make thoughtful, informed decisions that consider both the people at the table and those who aren’t. Cynthia’s work across the United States and the Middle East has also reinforced the importance of understanding each community on its own terms.

This Friday, October 8, Rotina Tian will join members of the American Society of Landscape Architects: Indiana Chapter Sustainability Committee for a panel discussion at the 2026 Conference on Landscape Architecture (COLA).

The panel will explore practical ways landscape architecture firms can advance sustainability through both project work and everyday practice. Rotina will share examples of how sustainability can be supported through firm-wide initiatives, post-occupancy evaluation, teaching and research, and the application of frameworks such as LEED and SITES.

We’re looking forward to hearing Rotina and the Sustainability Committee share ideas, lessons learned, and approaches that can help move sustainability from a project goal into an ongoing practice.
