What I’ve Learned in Five Years as a Small Business Owner
Five years in business has taught me that success comes through sacrifice, perseverance, and continuous learning. You’ll likely work longer hours than you ever did at a 9-to-5, sometimes while still working another job to make ends meet. In the early years, profits are often slim, accounting knowledge matters, and many people will expect you to fail—but persistence, preparation, and patience are what keep you moving forward.
I’ve learned that people are the foundation of any successful business. Building lasting customer relationships, keeping your word, treating employees with respect, staying organized, investing in quality equipment, and consistently marketing your brand are all essential. I’ve also learned that some customers expect more from a small business than they would from a large company—lower prices, around-the-clock availability, and special exceptions—so it’s important to provide outstanding service while recognizing the value of your time and expertise.
Finally, never stop learning. Understand your strengths and weaknesses, continue developing your skills, and always look for ways to improve. I don’t see other businesses as my competition—they’re my colleagues. My greatest competition is the person I was yesterday, and my goal is to become a better business owner every single day.💯🙏🏾
