October is a good time to actually walk your deck before you close up for the season. Not because something is definitely wrong, but because catching a problem now costs a fraction of what it costs in March when the damage has had a winter to grow.

The frame is where we start. A ledger board that isn't flashed correctly is letting water into your rim joist every time it rains. By the time you see soft wood from the inside, the repair is bigger than a deck project.

A cedar shingle house on the Cape deserves more than a patch job.

Most deck stairs get walked on daily and sit outside year round. The risers take rain splash, the treads take sun and salt air, and every joint works a little with the seasons. If they are not built square and sealed right from the start, you see the shift in a year or two.

We build stairs the same way we build the deck they connect to. Square cuts, proper spacing on the balusters, paint that wraps the edges. It takes longer. It also means the stairs still look clean after a Cape winter.
