😬That wouldn't be the kind of surprise that anyone wants...

>>>>What appears to be an electrical cable cutting through the baseboard trim. Electrical cables should be at least 1-1/4 inches from the finished face of the wall material so that people can't accidentally shoot a screw through the cable.

👀What is lurking in the attic?

➡Missing cover plate at attic junction box. Newer wiring added onto one of the original knob-and-tube circuits. Newer wiring should not be added onto knob-and-tube wiring as these circuits were designed for low levels of power. Adding more receptacles or fixtures onto these circuits adds more stress to the system and reduces the lifespan of the wiring.

🔍 Spot the Hazard:

Open wire splices and improperly altered knob-and-tube wiring in attic. Knob-and-tube wiring should not be covered in insulation. It was designed to have wires in free air to dissipate heat. Covering with insulation further breaks down the integrity of this already degrading wiring.

1️⃣ Are you properly licensed or registered for this work where required?

2️⃣ Can you provide proof of current insurance?

3️⃣ Is a permit required for my project?

4️⃣ Will an inspection be required, and who arranges it?

5️⃣ Can I get a written estimate explaining the scope of work?

A trustworthy contractor should welcome reasonable questions and help you understand the process.

🚨 Here's something every homeowner should know: electrical hazards don't stop at city limits.

Improper connections, overloaded circuits, damaged wiring, and missing safety protections can create risks even when no inspection is required.

Don't base your decision on whether someone will check the work. Choose a qualified professional who takes electrical safety seriously and follows the requirements that apply to your project.

Your family's safety is worth doing the job right.

🏡 Let's talk about something homeowners don't always think to ask: insurance.

Before hiring an electrical contractor, ask for proof of current insurance and confirm what coverage applies to the work being performed.

Insurance can help protect against certain covered claims, but policies and exclusions vary. Don't assume every policy provides the same protection.

A little due diligence before work begins can give you greater peace of mind.

⚡ Hiring someone for electrical work? It's okay to ask about their credentials!

Ask whether the electrician and contractor hold the licenses or registrations required for your location and type of work. Verify those credentials with the appropriate licensing authority.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. A professional should be willing to explain their qualifications and the work they're proposing.

Your home's electrical system deserves experienced, qualified care.

🔎 Who makes sure electrical work is safe?

Depending on the jurisdiction and project, electrical work may be subject to an inspection. But inspection requirements and processes vary.

An inspection is an important safeguard when required, but it isn't a substitute for good workmanship—and a lack of required inspection doesn't make unsafe work safe.

Ask who is responsible for inspections and what approvals are needed before the job starts.

📋 Before you start that electrical project, ask one important question: Do I need a permit?

Permit requirements can depend on your location and the type of work being performed. Don't rely on what a neighbor needed for a different project!

Contact your local building department before work begins. A qualified electrician should also be able to help you understand the process.

A quick question today can help prevent a costly surprise tomorrow.
