Wildlife Wednesday: Brown-Belted Bumblebee 🐝
Say hello to Bombus griseocollis, one of our lesser-known native bumblebees! These fuzzy friends are excellent pollinators and can often be seen buzzing around wildflowers and native perennials. Unlike honeybees, they’re solitary or form small colonies—and they’re especially active in late summer!

Brown-belted bumblebees are great generalists, meaning they pollinate a wide range of plants. So the more native blooms you grow, the more you’re helping bees like this one thrive. 🌼

Sunflowers bring a lot more to the garden than just good looks. 🌻
They support pollinators, feed birds, improve soil, and for very little in return.

If you’re looking for a native variety to try, Swamp Sunflower is a great late-season bloomer that thrives in Southern gardens.

✨ Ever heard a burst of chirps and looked up to see a flash of sunshine yellow? That’s the American Goldfinch, one of the most joyful signs of a healthy garden. 🐦

These birds aren’t just beautiful. They’re intentional. Goldfinches nest later than most birds to align with peak seed production from native plants like thistle, sunflower, and coneflower. They rely entirely on seeds, even when feeding their chicks.

🌻 Want to support goldfinches in your garden?
• Grow native, seed-producing plants
• Let seed heads dry out before cutting them back
• Avoid pesticides and herbicides
• Add a shallow birdbath with gently sloped edges
• Let parts of your garden stay a little wild

Goldfinches are a reminder that your yard does not need to be perfect to be valuable. A little mess can mean a lot of life. 🌿💛

This palette was inspired by a couple who wanted their yard to feel like a cozy retreat with a hint of the tropics—somewhere between a Southern porch and a boho garden getaway. 🍊🌺

We leaned into vibrant reds, oranges, and golden tones, balanced with lush greens and textured foliage. The goal? A space that feels alive, intentional, and deeply rooted in the rhythms of home.

Curious how color can shape the vibe of your outdoor space? Let’s talk 🌿

I’ve been seeing so many Gulf Fritillaries in the garden lately. They zip around like they own the place and alway land on the zinnias first.

They’re a perfect example of what this whole summer backyard ecosystem series is about—creating a space that doesn’t just look good, but actually supports life.

It’s easy to admire butterflies when they show up, but the real magic happens when your yard becomes a place they can stay. Nectar flowers for the adults, host plants for the caterpillars, even a little dish of water to help them stick around. Simple, intentional choices go a long way.

If you want more pollinators hanging around, start with a few native plants and a thoughtful layout. I design sustainable landscapes that bring beauty and biodiversity together.

Free consults if you’re curious. Let’s make your yard feel more alive 🌿

There’s something about the way apricot and lavender play together that feels a little like sunlight and stillness.
This palette—Apricot & Ice—isn’t just a combination of colors. It’s a feeling.
It’s soft, layered, and calm. A little wild in the best way.
The kind of garden that glows in the late afternoon and gives you space to breathe.

If this speaks to you, save it for inspiration or share it with someone who’s dreaming up their own garden space.
And if you want help designing something like this, I’d love to hear what you’re imagining.

Strawberry Season in the Kitchen 🍓
Sweet, juicy, and slipping past too quickly. Strawberries are on their way out here in Alabama, so I’ve been making the most of them while I can.

This week’s garden-inspired recipes are two of my favorites:
an iced strawberry matcha latte that layers just right and a strawberry basil smash (mocktail or cocktail — your call)

Both are simple, refreshing, and perfect for sipping outside.
Save them, try them, or just use them as inspiration for your own garden-to-glass creations.

More summer recipes coming soon 🌼

Zinnias bring the color, strawberries bring the sweetness. Together, they make a surprisingly great garden pair. Both love the sun, attract pollinators, and layer beautifully in edible beds or borders.

Strawberries are winding down here in Alabama, so if you’re lucky enough to spot a few more at your market, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the last of the season while the zinnias keep blooming strong.

Just a little dose of summer joy from the garden to you 🌿

Some evenings I step outside and just listen.

There’s a quiet hum that comes with summer. Crickets start up, lightning bugs flicker in the background, and if you’re lucky, you might catch the soft flit of wings overhead.

It’s easy to overlook the role bats play in these moments. But they’re part of the rhythm too, showing up right when we need them.

This week’s Wildlife Wednesday is part of my Summer Backyard Ecosystem series, and we’re shining a light on these nighttime helpers:
🦇 How bats support a healthy yard
🌿 What they need from us
✨ Why they’re worth protecting
