holding moisture.

check the basement corners, around windows and along
the bottom of finished walls, only where it is safe and
dry to do so.

If you find a wet carpet edge or water coming in, give

A gutter packed with wet leaves has nowhere to send water, so it spills over the edge and runs straight down the siding. From there, it pools against the foundation, where it can find its way into the basement or crawl space. Clearing the troughs and confirming your downspouts carry water several feet away from the house saves you a much bigger problem this fall.

The good news is that checking it takes about two minutes. Grab a bucket, run a quick test, and make sure the pump actually powers on and clears the water like it should.
