If you've been living in North Carolina for an extended amount of time, you probably know that our fall works a little different around here! Temperatures typically stay pretty warm until the holidays start rolling around. That means that your AC still could have a couple months of work left to do. This time of year is perfect to get your air conditioner fine tuned and fixed up because part availability and calendaring capacity is high due to the extreme heat moving away from us. Give Carolina Copper HVAC a call for fast, friendly, and great air conditioning service!

Your AC units take up a lot of space outside; furthermore, they sure can become an eyesore if they are aged and dirty! Laying drainage rock, mulch, or pine needles around them like our customers's units pictured here are great ways to clean them up. Having your AC systems cleaned once a year to keep grime and buildup off of them will not only help with eye appeal but also performance.

Power Bills Should Be Named HVAC Bills

Take a look at why we think power bills should be named HVAC bills for a quick view on just how much power your air-conditioning and heating system can use.

Every month we all receive a power bill from our city or location that provides power to our homes. Have you ever looked deeper into what uses the most power in your home? For most homeowners, we think about our lights, ...

In the past, mechanical thermostats were the norm for all houses, as they were the only technology available for HVAC systems. Mechanical thermostats regulate heat thanks to the expansion of their internal metallic strips. This strip carries electricity through the connected circuit, switching on the heating. As the strip heats up, one of the metals expands enough to open the circuit and switch off the heating, cooling the room down. One of the biggest reasons why mechanical thermostats can be so inefficient is because when you select a temperature setting, you're really settling on a temperature range, not an actual temperature.

More recently, mechanical thermostats have been replaced with digital and smart thermostats. Digital and smart thermostat are electric thermostats that utilize digital sensors to control your heating and air system. This method is far more effective in keeping a consistent temperature throughout your home. Instead of using a dial or lever, digital thermostats have buttons and a screen that allows us to select an exact temperature setting. Smart thermostats take this one step further. The ability to connect smart thermostats to your phone allows for a more convenient way to schedule temperature changes in your home and lower utility cost as they can be turned off remotely. Some smart thermostats can also predict temperature changes, allowing them to turn on early or turn off when no one is home, which saves more money.

Thermostat type and placement is critical for every air conditioner, heat pump, or furnace operation. Your system only listens to your thermostat to turn on and off, so why not ensure that you have the best out there? Any digital thermostat that displays its settings and readings is an upgrade from a mechanical thermostat. Smart thermostats that allow you to connect them to an app allows for a more convenient control experience. If your thermostat is older than 10 years, a mechanical type, or if it doesn't read the correct temperature, it's time for a thermostat replacement.

You've worked all day and are looking forward to coming home to a nice cool house only to find your air conditioner isn't cooling at all. For some, panic sets in! Are the filters dirty? Will the entire system be deemed unrepairable? Who will come out, and how much will it cost?
At Carolina Copper HVAC, we've dealt with this situation many times and have found the most common issue in the hot summer months is low refrigerant. The picture shows a system starting to freeze due to low refrigerant levels cycling in the system. Air conditioning refrigerant is what absorbs the heat inside your home and rejects it outdoors via your outdoor unit. Naturally, this liquid and v***r refrigerant mix has a boiling temperature well inside negative temperatures. Unlike water that boils at around 212 degrees Fahrenheit, air conditioning refrigerant boils around -55 degrees. This means any drop in refrigerant pressure within your AC system will most likely lead to very cold internal temperatures, which will cause the copper piping that contains that refrigerant to freeze.
1. The first dynamic of your AC to be affected is its capacity. This means it can no longer absorb as much heat inside your home because it doesn't have all the necessary refrigerant molecules to do so. You may notice first the temperature in your home isn't hot, but still isn't where you have the thermostat set to.
2. The second dynamic to be affected is airflow. When ice starts to build up on the indoor cooling coil, it will block airflow from entering your home, which will cause very little velocity to come out of your vents. This will also negatively impact your indoor temperature because along with not having enough refrigerant molecules to absorb heat, your air conditioner won't move as much air as it did before.
3. The third dynamic to be affected is your outdoor compressor. The compressor is located in your outdoor unit (condenser) and is what circulates refrigerant through your air conditioning system. The compressor is a refrigerant-cooled motor that desperately needs the correct amount to pass through it to keep it below overheating temperatures. In severe cases, the compressor can become completely destroyed due to overheating or inhibit internal damage to its electrical windings.
Knowing how your air conditioner works is a great way to prevent unnecessary damage to it. If your system is freezing or not keeping your thermostat where you set it, it could be a case of low refrigerant and should be addressed immediately. Check your filters first to ensure they’re not compacted past their intended amount, and if that doesn't do the trick, it's time to call Carolina Copper HVAC at (704) 658-6089!
