Handrail or guardrail? The terms are often used interchangeably, but they're designed to do different jobs. Understanding the difference early helps architects and contractors detail the right solution for each condition.

A handrail provides graspable support along stairs and ramps, while a guardrail provides a protective barrier at open edges, including balconies, terraces, and elevated walkways.
