If your attic ladder is inside the home and doesn't close all the way, that crack lets hot air, humidity, dust, and unwanted insects into the home, and if your return air is nearby, it will pull in even more air. An easy way to fix that is to install an Energy Attic Tent to seal the attic ladder.
