Last Friday, Asakura Robinson had the pleasure of participating in Park(ing) Day alongside Texas ASLA-Houston/Gulf Coast Section !

We transformed a typical Houston parking space into a geodesic dome a shaded, inviting space where people could gather, enjoy the breeze, and experience Houstonโ€™s outdoor environment in a new way. ๐Ÿ›๐ŸŒฑ

What started as a simple idea became a thoughtful design challenge from concept to installation. Each triangle of the dome featured imagery highlighting the principles of One Health, creating an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the connection between people, animals, and the environment.๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿชด๐Ÿง๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Park(ing) Day reminded us that even a small space can spark meaningful conversations about how we design and experience our cities.

The prototype of tomorrow is the way we approach today๐Ÿ’—

Even native plants need water during establishment and may require supplemental water during extreme Houston heat or drought. The goal should be to design the landscape to store and use rainfall rather than depend on permanent irrigation.
When applying the strategies above, The result is more than a low-water landscape.

It is a living water-management system:

This is a practical application of One Healthโ€”designing landscapes that improve human health, ecological health, water resilience, and biodiversity together.

Our founder, Keiji, recently visited a neighborhood park in Setagaya that offered a powerful reminder: some of the best-designed spaces are the ones that let nature lead.

Watching children climb trees, build with sticks, explore freely, and connect with the landscape sparked an important question for us as landscape architects and urban designers:

At our firm, we believe great public spaces do more than meet standards; they inspire curiosity, resilience, creativity, and a lifelong connection to nature. Sometimes the most meaningful design isnโ€™t about adding more, but allowing nature to do what it does best.

Part of the Asakura Robinson team recently had the opportunity to explore Buffalo Bayou from a unique perspective alongside Kirk from Art & Environmental. The field experience offered valuable insight into the bayouโ€™s rich history, including the remains of past structures and the stories they continue to tell about the areaโ€™s evolution.

Viewing the bayou from the water provided a rare vantage point, revealing landscapes and historic features that arenโ€™t visible from the ground. Despite the Texas heat, it was a memorable and rewarding day of learning, exploration, and appreciation for this remarkable waterway.โ˜€๏ธโ˜€๏ธ
