There is a hard floor on how narrow a Shaker rail can go, and it is set by the

hinge, not by taste. Almost nobody publishes it.

In this episode we go through the six cabinet door profiles worth specifying

going into 2027, what the industry data actually measures, and where we think

the market moves next. We keep those two things apart on purpose, because

nobody has real 2027 numbers yet and plenty of articles pretend they do.

TIMESTAMPS (measured from the merged file, not estimated):

0:00 - Intro

0:23 - Why door style is not a taste question

0:48 - There are only three cabinet door styles

1:46 - Inset is an installation method, not a door style

2:11 - Flat slab and the 69% number

2:55 - Where slab goes wrong on install

3:19 - Slim Shaker and the euro hinge floor

3:52 - What cabinet shops actually specify

4:36 - Wood grain overtakes paint

5:10 - What is actually replacing grey

6:03 - Fluted and glass, accent only

6:45 - Our 2027 read, clearly labelled

7:19 - Colour moves onto the cabinet

8:05 - Availability beats aesthetics, and lead times

SHOW NOTES:

Verified figures cited in this episode, with sources and sample sizes:

- 69% of professionals named flat slab a growing style (NKBA 2026 Kitchen

Trends Report, 634 North American kitchen and bath professionals)

- 72% specifying panel-faced refrigeration, 85% panel-faced dishwashers (NKBA 2026)

- 59% call wood grain a growing finish, white oak top species at 51% (NKBA 2026)

- Wood cabinetry 29% vs white 28%, the first time wood has edged ahead

(Houzz 2026 US Kitchen Trends Study, 1,780 homeowners)

- Rust +178%, chocolate brown +153%, mushroom +69%, olive +57% (Houzz 2026)

- Sandstone searches +257%, Venetian plaster +94% (Houzz 2026)

- Shop consensus on Shaker rail width: 2.25 to 2.625 inches (r/Cabinetry)

Everything about 2027 in this episode is labelled as projection. The full NKBA

2027 report has not been publicly released, and there are no published 2027

percentages anywhere. As of recording, neither Benjamin Moore nor Pantone has

released a 2027 colour of the year, and Sherwin-Williams published a forecast

called Rewild rather than a single colour. Treat any article claiming otherwise

with suspicion.

Lead times quoted are supplier snapshots checked September 2026, not an

industry benchmark. Confirm against your own supplier before contracting a date.

The certification standard every bathroom vanity in America is sold against tests a door. It does not test the box.

In this episode we give you all three answers up front. One, every moisture test in ANSI/KCMA A161.1 is run on a door, a door edge or a finished surface. Nothing tests the sides, the back, the deck or the toe kick, which are the parts that actually get wet. Two, the plumbing code fixes exactly two numbers: 21 inches of clear floor in front of the sink and the toilet, and 15 inches from either centreline to a side wall or a vanity. Three, water does not get in through the surface. It gets in at the cut edges.

Then we go through what the badges on a product page really mean, the sum that tells you the widest vanity your bathroom can take, why nobody has ever published a vanity depth, why the ADA number people quote is a maximum and not a target, what the drain does to your drawer plans, and where our own brand stops short.

Small Kitchen Remodeling: 2026 Costs, Layouts & Mistakes

A small kitchen does not need a bigger footprint to work better. It needs a smarter plan.

If you are thinking about remodeling a compact kitchen in Fairfax, Virginia, the decisions you make before demolition will have the greatest effect on cost, comfort, storage, and long-term value. Our newly updated 2026 Small Kitchen Remodeling Guide breaks down the numbers and design choices homeowners should understand before requesting estimates or selecting finishes.

The guide explains:

- What a small kitchen remodel can realistically cost in 2026
- Why online price estimates and contractor proposals often look very different
- How galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, and one-wall layouts affect daily workflow
- Why maintaining a clear 42-inch aisle can matter more than adding another cabinet
- How frameless cabinets, deep drawers, vertical dividers, filler pull-outs, and ceiling-height storage make limited space work harder
- When a peninsula is a better choice than a freestanding island
- Which lighting, colors, finishes, and appliances suit a compact room
- How much contingency money to reserve for problems discovered during demolition
- Which common design mistakes can make a small kitchen feel even tighter
- What remodeling may contribute to resale appeal and everyday enjoyment

A beautiful kitchen is only successful when it supports the way you actually cook, store groceries, clean, gather, and move through the room. That is why layout should come before door style, countertop color, or decorative details.

At USA Cabinet Store Fairfax, our designers help homeowners compare practical options, understand tradeoffs, and build a realistic remodeling plan around the available footprint and budget. Whether your project is a focused cosmetic update or a complete renovation, thoughtful planning can prevent expensive changes later and help every inch earn its place.

This article also includes visual examples of efficient storage, practical cabinet construction, peninsula seating, and a same-footprint before-and-after transformation.

Frameless kitchen cabinets, also called full access or European construction, are sold on storage. This episode argues that is the wrong reason to choose them.

What you gain is access: roughly an inch and a half to an inch and three quarters more opening on a base cabinet, and the ability to run a drawer or roll out pantry up to 36 inches wide with no center partition, where framed construction generally needs a center stile past about 24 inches. What you give up is roughly 8 to 15 percent on the price of the boxes, any possibility of inset doors in a semi custom line, and three things nobody raises in a showroom: the front edge you see between the doors is the box edge banding rather than a finished frame, crown molding and under cabinet lighting need build up strips to land on, and that banded edge takes the knocks a solid wood frame would otherwise absorb.

What actually decides it is your walls. A face frame is a tolerance budget, giving every door a local reference and letting an installer hide an out of plumb wall behind a stile. Frameless spends that budget on access. ANSI/AWI 0620 requires installation plumb and level within an eighth of an inch over eight feet, and caps a flush overlay frameless reveal at about an eighth of an inch. A Blum hinge returns plus or minus 2mm of side adjustment. The hinge absorbs a reveal error; it cannot absorb a racked box.

We also cover why published storage figures range from 4 percent to 20 percent, why frameless is not harder to install but is harder to install badly, the two questions to ask any installer bidding the job, the difference between Fabuwood Illume and Ovela that actually matters, and a correction on whether frameless can take inset doors.

If humidity swells or warps your cabinet doors, the manufacturer calls it normal wood behavior, and the warranty does not cover it. That one fact changes how seriously you take the air in your kitchen.

In this episode of The Remodel Report, Chris and Jessica cover the exact relative humidity band the EPA and cabinet manufacturers agree on, the 60-second pattern test that separates humidity damage from a plumbing leak, why your coffee maker is quietly cooking the cabinet above it, and the three-part routine that protects the sink base, the cabinet that always fails first.

How to Protect Kitchen Cabinets From Humidity and Moisture Damage

Your kitchen cabinets face more moisture than you may realize. Every uncovered pot, steaming kettle, dishwasher cycle, plumbing connection, and seasonal humidity change can affect the wood and finishes in your kitchen.

Over time, excess moisture may cause cabinet doors to stick, painted joints to develop fine hairlines, panel edges to swell, and vulnerable materials to lose their shape. The good news is that a few simple habits can help protect your cabinets and extend their life.

Here are some practical cabinet-care tips:

โœ… Run your range hood whenever you boil water or cook with steam. Let it continue running for several minutes after cooking to help remove lingering moisture.

โœ… Move electric kettles, coffee makers, pressure cookers, and similar appliances away from the underside of wall cabinets. Concentrated steam repeatedly hitting the same surface can eventually damage the finish and cabinet material.

โœ… Keep a small digital hygrometer in your kitchen. It provides a quick picture of your indoor humidity so you can respond before moisture becomes a bigger problem. Always follow the humidity recommendations provided by your cabinet manufacturer.

โœ… Wipe away spills and condensation promptly, particularly around the sink, dishwasher, refrigerator water line, and cabinet toe kicks.

โœ… Inspect the sink-base cabinet every month. Use a flashlight to check the P-trap, supply lines, disposal, and cabinet floor for moisture, discoloration, or swelling.

โœ… Place a waterproof tray liner inside the sink-base cabinet. It can contain small drips and give you time to find a leak before it damages the cabinet box.

โœ… Pay attention to the pattern. If several cabinet doors become tight during the same season, indoor humidity may be responsible. If damage appears in one concentrated area, investigate a plumbing or appliance leak first.

The material inside your cabinets also matters. Particle board can swell and crumble after significant water exposure, while quality plywood generally maintains its structure better. Understanding what your cabinets are made from can help you decide how quickly you need to respond to moisture.

Your cabinets are a major part of your kitchen investment. A working range hood, a simple humidity reader, a waterproof tray, and a short monthly inspection can prevent expensive damage later.

Your new shower has a window that closes and nobody tells you about it.

The glass has never met hard water. The grout has never been sealed. The silicone is still curing. Everything that goes wrong with a shower over the next decade traces back to something done, or skipped, in the first few days. Then the crew leaves and hands you nothing.

In this episode Chris and Jessica go through the whole sequence in order: why silicone rather than grout is what actually gates your first shower, why grout haze is not hard water and what happens when you treat it like it is, the solvent trap that clears your glass and quietly attacks your seal, and the one window where a protective coating bonds properly to virgin glass.

Every number in this episode comes from a manufacturer data sheet. All of them are linked below so you can check them against the products in your own shower.
