Same room. Same furnishings. Entirely different feeling.

The difference? Thoughtfully designed architectural millwork.

Beautifully proportioned wall paneling, carefully considered door surrounds, and ceiling details introduce rhythm, depth, and architectural character. Seeing a room with and without them reveals how much they contribute.

At Benjamin Johnston Design, these details are part of our earliest plans. Integrated with the architecture from the beginning, they create the permanence and refinement that help a home feel timeless.

Scottsdale, you certainly know how to make someone feel welcome!

One of the unexpected joys of bringing Refined Interiors on the road has been the opportunity to share not just our work, but the stories, lessons, and experiences that have shaped Benjamin Johnston Design along the way.

During Desert Design Week, I had the pleasure of joining John of Phoenix Home & Garden for a wonderful conversation about building a creative practice, finding your own design voice, embracing a little risk, and the journey from launching our firm to creating a furniture collection with Chaddock Furniture Workroom.

The beautiful Alexander Sinclair showroom provided the perfect setting for an afternoon of conversation, new connections, and signing copies of Refined Interiors.

A heartfelt thank you to Alexander Sinclair Showroom for the gracious hospitality, to John for such an engaging conversation, and to everyone who joined us. It’s these moments of connection with the design community that have made this book tour so meaningful.

It’s hard to picture the original bedroom once you’ve seen what it became.

This Georgetown primary bedroom renovation brought together a reworked layout, considered lighting, and architectural details that give the space its character. A marble fireplace and intricate ceiling moldings establish a classical foundation, while the clean lines of the canopy bed, layered textiles, and touches of plum bring a fresh perspective.

Each decision contributes to the way the room feels: calm enough to unwind, with plenty of personality to make it memorable.

Which detail caught your eye first?

Art is never just something you hang on a wall.

In a well-designed home, it can anchor the palette, shift the scale of a room, and create a focal point that changes how the space feels. A bold contemporary piece can bring energy. A quieter composition can bring balance.

When art is chosen with intention, it becomes part of the architecture, giving the room character, clarity, and a sense of authorship.

The right piece does not fill a wall. It makes the space feel complete.

A kitchen can work hard without looking like it does.

Thick-cut Patagonia quartzite wraps the island, giving it a sculptural presence while its crystalline veining plays against the quieter cabinetry. The contrast brings depth and energy to the room without allowing either material to overpower the other.

Nearby, the banquette shifts the mood. A softer palette and relaxed seating create an inviting place for everyday family life, while remaining connected to the architecture and material language of the kitchen.

Throughout the space, beauty and utility were considered as one. Durable materials, thoughtful details, and warmth come together in a kitchen that feels refined rather than precious—and makes the practical demands of daily life seem effortless.

That same conversation between architecture, material, and the way a family lives continues throughout the home. Discover the full project in Refined Interiors. Bring your copy home: https://amzn.to/4ypmZIL

If you don’t believe paint can do magic tricks, this kitchen makes a convincing case.

The architecture already had plenty worth keeping, so rather than start over, we freshened what was there—leaning into elements that felt classic while introducing a few notes from today.

The existing lower cabinets were painted black and finished with brass hardware. Even the ceramic tile backsplash was repainted on-site. Along with plaster, styling, and a handful of carefully considered updates, the kitchen took on an entirely different character without a gut renovation.

A good reminder that transformation isn’t always about replacing more. Sometimes it’s about seeing what’s already there differently.

San Francisco, thank you for such a warm welcome.

Great design is always about more than what meets the eye. Every decision—from the materials we select to the details we refine—has a purpose and becomes part of the story we help our clients tell.

It was a pleasure to share that perspective, sign copies of Refined Interiors, and spend time with such a thoughtful and engaged design community in the beautiful Witford showroom.

Thank you to , , and for bringing us together—and to everyone who joined us for the conversation.

If everything in a room is too precious, nothing is interesting.

The rooms that stay with us almost always contain something unexpected—an unusual antique, an oversized painting, a sculptural object, or a chair in a pattern you never would have predicted.

That bit of tension keeps a room from feeling too perfect. It gives the eye somewhere to pause and, more importantly, gives the room personality.

Because the most memorable interiors aren’t simply collections of beautiful things. They have contrast, curiosity, and a little surprise—something that makes you look twice and wonder about the story behind it.

Beauty draws you in. The unexpected makes you remember.

Conversations in full bloom. 🌿

What a pleasure to spend the weekend in Omaha for the 2026 Lauritzen Gardens Antiques & Design Show. I was honored to speak at Saturday’s Luncheon and sign copies of Refined Interiors, all surrounded by the beautiful setting of Lauritzen Gardens.

There’s something special about coming together over a shared appreciation for design, craftsmanship, and the stories that beautiful objects carry. I’m so grateful for the warm welcome, the incredible hospitality, and especially the wonderful conversations and new friendships made along the way.

Thank you to Lauritzen Gardens Antiques & Design Show, Lauritzen Gardens, and everyone who made the weekend so memorable—and to all who joined us. Omaha, you were wonderful. I can’t wait to come back and explore more!
