White grubs are the larvae of beetles, and through late summer and fall they feed on grass roots just below the surface. Once the roots are gone, the turf loses its anchor — so it peels back by hand, and irregular brown patches spread across the yard.

Here's how to confirm it before you spend a dollar on treatment: cut a one-square-foot flap of sod and fold it back, then count the grubs underneath. Five or more per square foot (up to about ten on healthy, well-watered turf) is the point where treatment pays off, according to Texas A&M AgriLife. Another tell-tale sign is extra digging — when birds, armadillos, and raccoons tear up the yard at night, they're hunting the grubs, not the grass.

If you're over the threshold, treat with a labeled turf product and water it in so it reaches the root zone. Keeping turf strong with proper mowing height and deep, infrequent watering helps it shrug off more grubs, too.

Nationwide, mice and rats move into an estimated 21 million homes each year, and once they're settled into the comfort of your house, they rarely leave on their own.

Seeing round, straw-colored circles creep across your St. Augustine lawn as the nights cool off? That's almost certainly large patch (often called brown patch) — the most common fall lawn disease in the Houston area, and it moves fast once conditions are right.

Here's what triggers it. Large patch is a fungus that flares when nighttime temperatures drop below about 70°F and the grass canopy stays wet for long stretches — think heavy dew, evening watering, or an autumn cold front after a warm, humid stretch. The classic sign is a circular patch, roughly one to three feet across, with a darker "smoky" ring around the edge and grass that pulls up easily.

Keep it in check:
✅ Water only at sunrise, 1–2× a week — never in the evening — so blades dry fast
✅ Don't over-fertilize with nitrogen in fall; it feeds the fungus
✅ Improve drainage and airflow, and bag clippings from infected areas

Why do tiny reddish-brown ants suddenly pour across your patio, walls, and outlets every fall? In Greater Houston, the odds are you're looking at tawny crazy ants — and September and October are their peak.

They don't behave like the fire ants you're used to. Tawny crazy ants (first found right here in Harris County) skip the single mound and single queen. They form sprawling, multi-queen "supercolonies" with millions of workers, so spraying the ones you can see barely dents the population — which is exactly why store-bought sprays and bait stakes so often fail on this species.

They're also drawn to electricity. Huge numbers pack into outlets, AC units, irrigation boxes, and appliance housings, and their sheer volume can short the equipment out. Worse, a crushed ant releases an alarm pheromone that calls in even more.

What actually helps:
✅ Skip the DIY sprays — they scatter the colony instead of killing it
✅ Pull mulch, wood, and debris back from the foundation
✅ Treat in fall with a bait-based IPM plan, when it works best
