The swivel base on my big bench vise wouldn't lock. The handle stripped years ago. The vise spun when I hammered on it. I welded a 1/2 inch nut to the base casting, threaded a bolt in, and welded the bolt head to the moving part. It's locked solid now. Zero swivel. But I never needed to swivel it anyway. The vise is part of the bench now. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The ROPS on my tractor had no lights. I work nights. I welded two light tabs from 3/16 plate to the top corners of the ROPS. Drilled holes for LED pods. Welded the tabs with three passes each and ran the wire inside the ROPS tube so it can't get snagged. I can see 100 yards behind me now. The welds are ugly but the lights are straight. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The J-hooks on my power rack were bending when I reracked heavy. Scared me every time. I cut new hooks from 1/2 inch plate, bent them in the vise, and welded them to 1-inch square tubing sleeves that slide over the rack uprights. Welded the hook to the sleeve with a full 360 fillet. They don't bend, they don't slip. I racked 405 yesterday and didn't flinch. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible

The steel chassis on my vintage tube amp cracked right where the power transformer mounts. Heavy iron bouncing around cracked the spot welds. I TIG welded the crack shut with 70S-2 wire, low heat, tack-tack-tack so I didn't warp the thin steel or cook the components nearby. Transformer is solid now. No more 60-cycle hum from the loose iron. Amp sounds cleaner than ever. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The transom on my jon boat was flexing bad. The motor was shaking the whole boat. I pulled the motor, cut a 1/4 inch aluminum plate to match the transom curve, and welded it over the entire back with a spool gun. 5052 aluminum, 5356 wire. Stitch welded every 3 inches so it flexes with the boat not against it. Bolted the motor back on. Zero vibration now. The boat planes faster. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible

There’s always one welding position that humbles everybody 👀

What’s been your most frustrating shop moment lately?

The aluminum subframe on my dirt bike cracked where the seat bolts on. Aluminum welding on a bike frame is sketchy but I had nothing to lose. I cleaned it with a dedicated SS brush, preheated it with a torch, and TIG welded it with 4043 rod. Slow and hot. Let it cool in the sand. Ground the bead flush. The subframe is straight and the seat bolts are tight. Rode a hare scramble last weekend. Held up perfect. The final weld was left unpainted and fully visible

The caster plate on my shop cart ripped out of the angle iron leg. The cart was useless. I cut a 6x6 inch piece of 3/16 plate, welded it across the whole leg to box it in, then welded the new caster plate to that. The leg is now a solid box section. I loaded 400 pounds of steel on that cart and pushed it across the shop. Didn't flex a thousandth. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

A raccoon ripped the wire right off the frame of my chicken coop. Lost three hens in one night. I welded 1/2 inch square tubing around the entire perimeter of every vent and door opening. I welded the hardware cloth inside the tubing with a MIG gun so nothing can pull it out. 200 feet of welding in one weekend. Haven't lost a bird since. The raccoons come around but they can't get in. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.

The pole on my driveway basketball hoop cracked right at the base plate. The whole thing leaned 10 degrees. Every jump shot shook the rim. I pulled the pole up straight with a come-along, welded the crack shut with 7018, then welded a 1/4 inch doubler plate sleeve around the whole base. Four passes on the top, four on the bottom. The pole is dead straight now. I dunked on it yesterday and it didn't move. The final welds were left unpainted and fully visible.
