BEFORE YOU TURN ON THE HEATβ¨οΈ
β¨Your 5-Minute First Cold Front Checklist
That first Texas cold front finally shows up, you walk over to the thermostat and switch from COOL to HEAT...
But before you do, give your heating system a quick 5-minute check.
You don't need to be an HVAC expert. These five simple steps can help you spot potential problems before the night you really need the heat.
β
1. CHECK YOUR AIR FILTER
Start with the easiest one.
Pull out your HVAC filter and take a look at it. If it's covered in dust and dirt, replace it.
A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make your system work harder than it needs to.
Quick tip: Don't rely only on how long the filter has been installed. Homes with pets, allergies, remodeling dust or heavier HVAC use may need filter changes more frequently.
β
2. MAKE SURE YOUR VENTS ARE OPEN & CLEAR
Walk through the house and take a quick look at your supply and return vents.
Make sure they aren't blocked by:
ποΈ Furniture
π¦ Boxes
π§Ί Laundry baskets
πͺ Curtains
πΆ Pet beds
π§Έ Toys or other household items
Good airflow matters for both comfort and system performance.
And if one room never seems to get as warm as the others, make a note of it.
β
3. CHECK YOUR THERMOSTAT
Before blaming the heating system, check the thermostat.
Make sure it's:
βοΈ Set to HEAT
βοΈ Set to a temperature above the current room temperature
βοΈ Displaying normally
βοΈ Not showing a low-battery warning
Then raise the temperature a few degrees and see whether the heating system starts.
β
4. TEST THE HEAT BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY NEED IT
Don't wait until the first really cold night to discover there's a problem.
Turn the heat on and let it run for a few minutes.
Pay attention to:
π Unusual noises
π Strong or unusual odors
π‘οΈ Air that doesn't seem to be warming
π¨ Weak airflow
β±οΈ A system that doesn't start or keeps shutting off
About that smell: A mild dusty or burning-dust smell can happen the first time you turn on the heat after months of not using it as dust burns off. It should typically fade fairly quickly.
If you notice a strong electrical, plastic, persistent burning or other concerning odor, turn the system off and have it checked.
β
5. LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR SYSTEM IS TELLING YOU
Your heating system doesn't have to completely stop working before there's a problem.
Listen for anything that sounds different from normal:
π© Banging
π© Grinding
π© Screeching
π© Buzzing
π© Repeated clicking
π© Frequent starting and stopping
You know what your house normally sounds like.
If something suddenly sounds different, don't ignore it.
π₯ YOU'RE DONE!
Five minutes now could help you catch a problem before the temperature drops and you're depending on your heat to keep the house comfortable.
And remember: finding something on this checklist doesn't automatically mean you're looking at a major repair.
Sometimes it just means it's time to have a professional take a look.
