Is Your Plumbing Holding You Back?

Proper water pipe sizing is one of the most overlooked factors in a well-performing plumbing system. Pipe diameter directly affects water volume (flow rate) and the pressure delivered at every fixture.

When pipes are undersized, you get restricted flow, noticeable pressure drops, weak showers, slow-filling fixtures, and inconsistent performance—especially when multiple outlets are used at once.

In south central Missouri, undersized piping is a surprisingly common issue in both older and newer construction.

That’s why AmickBuilt Plumbing recommends PEX-A tubing installed with Uponor expansion fittings.

Unlike many undersized crimp fittings that create internal restrictions and reduce flow, Uponor expansion fittings maintain the full inside diameter of the pipe.

The result is unrestricted volume, better pressure at the fixture, fewer fittings, quieter operation, superior freeze resistance, and long-term reliability.

Don’t settle for restricted performance. Let AmickBuilt Plumbing evaluate your system and upgrade you to properly sized PEX-A with Uponor expansion fittings for lasting results.

🔧 Kitchen sink not draining? A quick snake might get the water moving today… but if the real problems aren’t fixed, the clog will be back.

We recently responded to a client whose kitchen sink had stopped working.

Under the cabinet we found classic trouble: an S-trap with incorrect venting (dropping into a 1½” sanitary tee, then running horizontally to a 90° and up to an air admittance valve).

Down in the basement it got worse.

The horizontal drain under the kitchen was also only 1½” pipe. It had been pushed upward by ductwork and was poorly supported in several places, creating high and low spots instead of a consistent slope.

Here’s why that matters:

In a gravity drain, water carries both liquids and solids (food particles, grease, etc.).

For the system to stay clear, that mixture needs the right fluid velocity—fast enough to keep solids suspended and moving, but not so fast that the liquid races ahead and leaves the solids behind.

That ideal speed is created by proper percentage grade—¼ inch of fall per foot of run for smaller pipes.

When the pipe has high and low spots from poor support or interference, water slows in the flat or uphill sections.

Solids drop out, pack hard, and the clog cycle begins.

Proper vent placement is equally critical.

Vents let air into the system so water can flow freely and protect the trap seal.

When the vent is in the wrong location (as it was here), flow is restricted, drainage slows, and solids have even more chance to settle.

We explained all of this to the client: we could snake the line and get temporary flow, but without correcting the piping, grade, support, and venting, the problem would return.

Our plumber Layne went back and did the job right.

When he removed the old 1½” pipe, it was packed with years of solids—clear proof the drain had never been working the way it should.

After properly re-piping, supporting, and grading the line, the sink is draining better than it ever has.

Correct slope + correct pipe size + correct venting = a drain that stays clear for years instead of needing repeated service.

Is your water causing soap scum, rusty stains, or corroding your pipes? 💧

AmickBuilt Plumbing can test your water right at home for the common problems that affect comfort, appliances, and plumbing:

• Hardness (measured in grains per gallon) – the calcium & magnesium that create scale buildup, bathtub rings, and extra soap use

• Iron (in parts per million) – the culprit behind yellow/rusty stains in sinks, toilets, and laundry (ferrous, ferric, or bacterial)

• Acidity / pH – low pH water that etches fixtures and shortens the life of water heaters and pipes

Know what you’re dealing with so you can protect your home and save money long-term.

Anyone can run a snake down a clogged drain.

Anyone can look at some fittings on a diagram and put the pieces together.

That’s what separates REAL plumbers from pretenders.

Smart homeowners don’t gamble with temporary fixes.

They call the pros who actually understand the system.

When your drains need more than a quick snake, trust Amick Plumbing.

We don’t just clear the clog — we fix the reason it happened.
