Spider Lilies 🕷️

These showy red flowers happen to bloom during the peak weeks of hurricane season which is why they're called hurricane lilies.

Blooms are usually red but sometimes display shades of white, pink and yellow.

When people say “hurricane lilies,” they’re using an overarching term that includes several different plants. Some might call these spider lilies, surprise lilies or naked ladies.

Hurricane lilies do best in slightly alkaline soils with good drainage. Like other members of the amaryllis family, they grow from bulbs and form clumps. Over time, they can become overcrowded, which reduces blooms

While many are winding down their gardens, August signals the time when you can start to plant root vegetables like beets, carrots and radishes. If you don't want to be out in the heat, many of these cool-season crops can be planted well into winter.

It's about time to pick pears in Louisiana. It's recommended to harvest pears when you first see them change from green to yellow. The fruit is delicate so be careful when putting them in your basket or bucket.

Take those harvested pears and place them on a counter inside or wrap them in newspaper and place them in a box until they ripen. Pears are ready to eat when you press your thumb on the top of the pear near the stem and you feel some softness. After they're ripe, they can go in the fridge until you're ready to eat them.
