We are often asked why the snow on top of a septic tank is melting faster than surrounding areas. Some people worry this is a sign for concern, but it is normal!

Septic tanks stay warm primarily due to biological activity and insulation from the ground. Here’s why:

1. Bacterial Activity – Inside the tank, bacteria break down waste, generating heat as a byproduct of decomposition. This microbial activity helps maintain a warmer environment.

2. Insulation from Soil – The deeper the tank is buried, the more the surrounding soil acts as insulation, preventing extreme cold temperatures from reaching the tank.

3. Warm Wastewater – Water from showers, laundry, and dishwashing enters the tank at a relatively warm temperature, helping to keep it from freezing.

4. Minimal Air Exposure – Since the tank is mostly sealed and underground, it doesn’t lose heat as quickly as something exposed to the open air.
