Hoopa Valley Tribal Forestry The Hoopa Tribal Forestry Page is for information sharing and for answering questions in regards to the work Hoopa Tribal Forestry implements.

The Hoopa Valley Tribal Forestry Department under the direction of the Hoopa Valley Tribal Council is responsible for the management of over 87,000 acres of timberland. Hoopa Tribal Forestry's management practices have adopted methods that help maintain and better protect sensitive habitats that our wildlife and natural resources depend on. The forests of the Hoopa Reservation have been and still are utilized by Hoopa Tribal Members for hunting and gathering. These cultural activities continue today. The forest grows an abundance of culturally useful plant species, such as bear grass, hazel sticks, and ferns. The Forests also provide habitat favorable to the animal species tribal members have hunted for subsistence and for cultural uses, such as dance regalia. The management is facilitated by the Hoopa Valley Tribes "Forest Management Plan" (FMP) which has been in place since 1994. The Hoopa Tribes FMP introduced a shift from a pure commercial timber production operation to a more environmentally aware and responsible management strategy that focused more on sustainability and multiple resource uses. Hoopa Tribal Forestry consists of several environmental specialty departments: Timber Department, Wildlife Department, Planning Department, Fuels Management Department, and Silvicultural Department. These departments all work within the Natural Resource Division more commonly known as The Hoopa Tribal Forestry Department. This is a safe space strictly for information purposes. Racism, sexism, arguing, bullying, spam, politics, bots, social media trolls, or misinformation spreading will not be allowed or tolerated on this page; violators will be banned and blocked.

Hoopa Forestry is hosting the national Department of Interior Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team assigned to the MP18 Fire. Hoopa Forest Manager, Clarence Hostler, is a member of the BAER Team. The BAER Team was brought assembled to evaluate burn severity and post-wildfire threats to human life, safety, and property as well as critical natural and cultural values important to Hoopa Tribe members. The BAER Team report will specify and recommend funding necessary for emergency stabilization and value-added rehabilitation projects that can be implemented during the next 1-3 years.

Hoopa Valley Tribe Sudden Oak Death Incident Response

In May 2026, Sudden Oak Death (Phytophthora ramorum, SOD) was detected on several tan oak trees located on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation downslope of the Dowd Road/Nixon Ranch Road approximately midway between Hoopa and Weitchpec, California. Acorns from tan oak trees are an essential food source with significant cultural value to the Hupa people. Hoopa Forestry is collecting and testing vegetation samples within the vicinity to assess the full magnitude and extent of occurrence; coordinating with forest pathologists; and developing a plan to treat infected areas to eliminate spread and occurrence. Preliminary results indicate that the occurrence is localized.

Sudden oak death is a water mold pathogen that can kill a variety of plants, particularly canyon live oak and tan oak trees which are common on the HVIR. The pathogen may be spread when infected water, live plant material, or spore-infested wet or dry soil is moved. Once an infected tree dies, the mold dies with it. Hoopa Forestry has been monitoring for this pathogen for several years and increased monitoring intensity after the detection. The plan will identify vegetation treatment, surveys, access, education, and other measures aimed to eliminate and detour occurrence. Vegetation treatment may include cutting and burning infected trees and nearby vegetation.

Hoopa Forestry encourages forest users to avoid areas downslope of the Down Road/Nixon Ranch Road; avoid removing water, soil, or live plant material; and to thoroughly wash vehicles, equipment, clothing, and pets before or as soon as practical after leaving the area. Using disinfectants such as Lysol or 10% solution of bleach improves cleaning efficacy.

Yesterday, the Forestry-Fuels Department, led by Kevin Lane, partnered with the Tribal Historic Preservation Department, overseen by Keduescha Colegrove, in an experimental cultural fire application. Basket weavers were encouraged to burn beargrass to create favorable conditions for basketry materials. This collaboration reflected vision, responsibility, and expertise, and was an exciting success. Each participant expressed joy and a sense of catharsis in maintaining the resource with fire. HVTF is proud to bridge these stewardship actions, making participation accessible to those who utilize the resource.
