It is more than the buildings around us. It is the places we gather, the businesses we return to, along with the art, food, culture, and relationships that make a place feel like home.

Where science, stewardship, and design come together.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiʻi Volcano Observatory (HVO) Field Station was designed to support continuous monitoring of Kīlauea and Mauna Loa while advancing scientific research, emergency response, and public outreach within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Working alongside USGS and the National Park Service, our team designed a resilient facility that balances the technical demands of a modern research laboratory with the responsibility of protecting one of Hawaiʻi's most significant natural and cultural landscapes.

The project preserves mature native trees and historic site features, incorporates salvaged lava rock from the original observatory, and draws inspiration from the park's architectural character. The result is a facility that supports critical scientific work while respecting the place it calls home.

Purpose-built for one of the world's most active volcanic landscapes, the HVO Field Station demonstrates how thoughtful design can advance science, strengthen community resilience, and serve the people of Hawaiʻi.

Resilience isn’t something we build alone.

Dr. Kealoha Fox, Chief Resilience Officer and Executive Director for the City and County of Honolulu Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency, reminds us that our greatest strength lives in pilina, relationships grounded in trust, care, and accountability.

Beyond data, policies, and plans, resilience is ultimately about people showing up for one another and working together so Hawaiʻi can continue to thrive.

The Hawaiʻi State Capitol was recognized with a Centennial Award at last week's AIA Honolulu Design Awards Gala.

Celebrating projects whose significance has only grown with time, the Centennial Award recognizes architecture that continues to serve its community for generations. More than five decades after its completion, the Hawaiʻi State Capitol remains Hawaiʻi's civic heart, embodying openness, connection to place, and the spirit of aloha through its enduring design.

Originally completed in 1969, the Capitol was designed to reflect Hawaiʻi's unique identity through symbolism deeply rooted in place. Today, it continues to fulfill its original purpose as the home of Hawaiʻi's government while standing as one of the state's most enduring civic landmarks.

Mahalo to AIA Honolulu for bringing together Hawaiʻi's design community to celebrate excellence in architecture, and congratulations to all of this year's award recipients. We are proud to celebrate alongside the many firms, project teams, and students whose work continues to strengthen our communities and help build a better Hawaiʻi.

How do we build a more resilient Hawaiʻi while remaining rooted in the people, places, and values that define our islands?

That question guided the latest installment of AHL's Art + Design + Architecture panel series, bringing together leaders from government, academia, sustainability, and environmental science for an evening of thoughtful dialogue on the future of Hawaiʻi.

Together, our panelists explored resilience through many lenses, from climate adaptation and Indigenous knowledge to coral reef restoration, community well-being, and cross-sector collaboration. The conversation reinforced that resilience isn't built by any one profession or organization, but through partnership, shared responsibility, and a commitment to place.

Le Jardin Academy welcomed students back this spring semester with a new home for creativity — the Arts & Innovation Center (AIC), now open on campus. 🎨🤖

As Design Architect and Architect of Record, AHL crafted a 15,150 sq ft facility that brings together Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Design, and Robotics under one roof — with flexible classrooms, collaborative spaces, and a central gallery where students can connect and showcase their work. Every design decision was intentional — from placing the building to follow the natural shape of the land and preserve open play areas, to orienting it to buffer prevailing winds. The signature split roof form is symbolic of an open mind and Le Jardin Academy’s spirit of discovery.

Guided by Le Jardin Academy’s commitment to Innovate for Positive Change, our design weaves a narrative of discovery and impact for students, teachers, and the broader educational community. In addition to supporting student programs, the Arts & Innovation Center is envisioned as a hub for community workshops, partnerships, and lifelong learning opportunities, welcoming community members and partners to collaborate alongside students.

Congratulations to Le Jardin Academy and the entire project team — we can't wait to see what students create in this space.
