Great design isn't about working around standard builder layouts. It takes real vision to rethink the space completely and build what actually belongs.

When designer Liz Mearns of Imagine Design brought us into this Old Town Alexandria townhouse, a builder-installed electric fireplace took up the main wall and forced the TV to an uncomfortable height. The homeowner and Liz made the bold call to take it down. To give the open wall true architectural purpose, our master cabinet designer Don collaborated closely with them to craft a floor-to-ceiling installation tailored around the homeowner's daily routine running a local health and yoga studio. Built from ceiling to wall, the finished rift-sawn white oak features a gorgeous grain that is simply stunning in person. We integrated Precision pocket door hardware so the built-in wet bar disappears completely during the workweek, keeping the room calm, clutter-free, and effortlessly host-ready by Friday evening.

Project Details:

•Floor-to-ceiling rift-sawn white oak finished in a custom tea stain
•Hand-milled reeded cabinet doors with smooth bullnose edges
•Vertical wood grain aligned to meet the crown molding seamlessly
•Precision pocket door hardware that conceals the built-in wet bar
•Low-profile drawer storage paired with a wide sitting bench

For a busy studio owner, returning home to an organized, quiet space makes unwinding solo or pouring drinks for friends feel simple.

Why surround ourselves with chaos when what we really crave is calm order? As early autumn arrives, there is a natural desire to return to focus and routine. Fall reminds us to let go of unnecessary clutter as the season turns.

As AR Interiors put it, “Hot take: your home office doesn’t have to look like the accounting department.” It immediately calls to mind Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano, trudging into a dreary, soul-crushing workspace. An executive office should never feel cold or sterile. It should invite you in with complete clarity, not confront you with forgotten paper stacks or leftover cups from yesterday.

We build intentional organization. Designed in close collaboration with AR Interiors, this custom built-in credenza serves as the room’s architectural foundation, an intentional blueprint for peace of mind. Painted in Baby Fawn, the soft, creamy hue seamlessly grounds the space alongside stunning wallpaper.

True craftsmanship lies in hidden luxury. Upon closer inspection, you’ll discover the subtle, handcrafted details expected from quiet luxury: solid wood drawers that glide effortlessly and close with a whisper to neatly secure paperwork, contracts, and daily essentials out of sight.

When bespoke craftsmanship meets everyday comfort, you can sit back with a clear mind and perhaps even end the day with a glass of an Old Fashioned or Rye Whiskey.

Design Details

Inset Precision: Bench-made 3/4" flat-panel fronts engineered with exact precision for seamless frame alignment.

Design is a game of strategy: pairing a baby blue palette with warm brass accents to pull off a show stopping coastal bar requires calculated decisions.

When AR Interiors envisioned an airy, balmy lounge inside this Sea Girt basement, bringing sharp architectural geometry into a below-grade footprint took line-by-line coordination with cabinet designer JR.

Architects, builders, and designers know coastal basements present unique trade challenges. Beyond the warm brass hardware, crisp shadow reveals, and high-gloss Nantucket Fog finish so brilliant you can see your reflection, the build relies on solid construction. Moisture-stabilized maple framing, hand-fitted dovetails, and heavy-duty mechanics work together to resist salt-air swelling. When smart design connects with precise millwork, clean geometry and everyday function come together effortlessly in this below-grade retreat.

The Master Design Difference:

Plain Inset Frame Construction: Solid 3/4-inch paint-grade maple face frames were scribe-fit flush to the surrounding architecture, requiring zero filler strips.

Precision Fluted Profiling: Custom 3/4-inch fluted door panels feature 3/16-inch recessed geometry, all sealed under a high-sheen conversion finish.

Warm Brass Integration: Mortised brass hardware and accents custom-fitted for smooth, tarnish-resistant operation.

Purpose-Built Layouts: Custom interior configurations tailored specifically for barware, spirits, and game-night storage.

Whether pouring a cold Hendricks gin or calculating your next move for checkmate, living with custom millwork turns simple routines into moments of pure ease.

August is officially half end-of-summer party prep and half lunch-box assembly line. 🎉🎒

When bringing a hardworking space like this custom pantry to life with designer Liz Mearns, the best results come from a close partnership between design vision and millshop ex*****on. Liz wanted a moody, memorable space that felt like a boutique feature rather than a hidden storage closet.

To build cabinetry that could handle heavy daily traffic while looking immaculate, our shop selected Paint Grade Maple. It is our preferred hardwood substrate for dark painted finishes because its tight, dense grain creates a smooth surface without wood texture showing through over time. We coated the cabinets beautifully inside and out in Railings, a deep charcoal navy that grounds the entire room.

Function was just as critical as the aesthetic. We constructed frameless full-overlay cabinet boxes to eliminate unnecessary face frames and center stiles, giving full access to every inch of shelf space for party platters and pantry staples alike.

For the door profile, we crafted 1-inch thick Euro fronts featuring a 5/8-inch bevel frame. That extra door thickness gives the sleek Jasper brass handles a solid foundation and creates a heavy, quality feel in your hand every time you open a cabinet.

Set against the graphic fan-leaf wallpaper and dark stone counters, the finished pantry turns everyday routines into something special. A thoughtful layout proves that utility and beautiful design can live comfortably together in the same room. ✨

Nobody tells you high-end design is 10% mood boards and 90% staring at walnut grain alignments wondering if anyone else on the planet will notice.

Spoiler... we notice. 😉

Sourcing a beautiful mix of wood, stone, and metal is one thing. Crafting a space that feels naturally settled over time is the real art.

We had the privilege of building custom cabinetry for designer ’ personal kitchen. After decades of family meals here, Liz brought us in to craft custom inset cabinetry that grounds the home alongside dramatic full-slab marble.

The Design & Millwork Details:

• Custom Inset Cabinetry: Classic face-frame construction with flush inset doors. Soft-painted perimeter cabinetry balances a warm, stained walnut island and seamlessly integrated refrigeration panels.

• Stone & Millwork Integration: Cabinet frames were built for clean, precise scribe-lines to receive sweeping marble slabs which were expertly installed by .

• The Living Kitchen Concept: Replacing traditional upper cabinets, along the plastered hearth with cozy armchairs, deep-set window casing, and a warm counter lamp shifts the prep zone into an inviting living kitchen movement.

As Liz put it best, her husband does the cooking, so she wanted a great chair nearby to be part of it all. The result feels lived-in, warm, and entirely natural.

Achieving continuous horizontal grain matching across a full run is an engineering feat in custom millwork. But managing hardware tolerances across a 9-foot cabinetry stack? That's arguably the most demanding detail.

When you integrate a concealed coffee station into a floor-to-ceiling rift-sawn white oak unit, there's zero margin for site error. The pocket doors don't just need to slide smoothly, the reveals have to align perfectly with the upper cabinet doors and the drawer banks below across the full 108.5-inch height.

To deliver a flush fit that operates effortlessly without binding over time, three things happen long before delivery:

Symmetrical Reveal Alignment: Setting exact 3 mm to 4 mm pocket gaps so the doors stay flush with adjacent face frames and upper doors.

Retraction Cavities: Specifying heavy-duty, smooth-glide track hardware inside dedicated pockets to prevent door flex or internal rubbing.

Early Site Coordination: Working directly with the builder to verify the floor is level and wall framing is plumb within 1/16 inch before cabinetry goes in.

Daily Functional Luxury: An integrated prep sink, task lighting, and concealed storage turn a routine morning cup into an elevated experience.

Swipe through to see the progression from closed face frames to full pocket door retraction, plus the CAD shop drawings behind the build.

When planning a main kitchen run, are you team "Keep the coffee station on display" or "Hide it all behind seamless oak doors"?

When you walk into a kitchen this stunning, you don't just walk in.

You glide.

Ideally straight to the espresso machine.✨

Cue the scene of Tom Cruise singing "Old Time Rock and Roll" in Risky Business.

Okay, let's be real. There is no risky business here, just pure trade innovation.

When you work with a designer who brings a vision this clear to a home, you know the cabinetry has to look spectacular while surviving real-life chaos. We are talking wet kids dripping water fresh from the pool, muddy paws tracking past the island, and sticky hands grabbing the wood panels when they should probably be using the brass pulls.

That is when you smile, knowing you already had your first cup of coffee for the day, beautifully fueled by the daily chaos.
Since we are leading with the coffee bar, call it intelligent design. As you can see from this perspective, the coffee bar and beverage station is completely independent of the main cooking area. It keeps morning traffic flowing smoothly during the rush.

If you look closely at the coffee bar, specifically those tall panels on the left enclosing the refrigerator, you can see the detail our shop is most proud of. The wood grain flows continuously from top to bottom. It is a quiet, highly precise touch that keeps the lines of the room clean, even when that integrated fridge is being yanked open for the twentieth snack of the afternoon.

We also got to collaborate with the talented stone team at on this one. The gold veining in their incredible marble slab pairs spectacularly with the warm tones of our white oak. The vision of running the stone up into a matching integrated slab backsplash and a mitered floating shelf was brilliant. It frames the range beautifully and turns everyday cooking essentials into a curated art piece... assuming you actually put the olive oil back where it belongs. Hmmm. 🤔

The ultimate design secret here, though, is the texture. Look at the end of the dark island, and then look across the aisle to the white oak base cabinet next to the range. We carried a custom micro-reeded motif across both finishes. It creates a subtle, tactile connection throughout the space, and thankfully, that dark, textured island profile is incredibly forgiving when it comes to stray kicks and scuff marks.

Hearing from the designer that the homeowners walk in every evening and still can’t believe they get to live here is the absolute best feedback we could raise our coffee cup to. Cheers to the homeowners, the designer, and the entire trade team! ☕

Everyone loves designing a powder room. It is the ultimate playground for bold patterns, rich textiles, and moody lighting. It’s the one space where you can throw out the rulebook. Whether you're designing a moody floral escape or a crisp, high-contrast retreat, this high-traffic space demands a fearless aesthetic, especially when hosting family and friends for summer gatherings. A bold backdrop requires a masterfully crafted anchor.

At Master Design Cabinetry, we live for the challenge of these tight spaces, working closely with homeowners alongside designers and builders. Our focus is ensuring the invisible engineering is just as intentional as the slab of marble in front of it. We bring precision to every square inch, whether it's an old-world classic or a modern vanity.

When square footage is tight, there’s no room for error. From hand-turning solid oak legs for a marble trough to engineering steel frameworks for heavy, fluted walnut blocks, structural integrity is non-negotiable. Every detail is crafted to ensure your piece stands up to daily life and high-volume hosting.

The Master Design Difference…

▫️ Continuous Grain Matching: Wood grain flows seamlessly across panels and doors.

▫️ Heavy-Load Framework: Discreet reinforcement designed to support massive stone and reclaimed timber tops.

▫️ Plumbing-Contoured Storage: Custom-configured internal drawer boxes maximize storage around your pipe layout.

The result is an executed space that honors the original design intent and functions beautifully for decades.
