First up is the meal that Chef Silas made last Saturday: lamb tonnato with grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes. The next pic is the appetizer, stuffed mushrooms, which preceded that meal. And that's followed by a photo of the herbs I picked for our chef that morning.

The rest of this video goes back in time to Mother's Day, when came here to Chez Rea and cooked for us. That meal began with tortilla chips and a new salsa recipe which had zucchini in it, followed by scallops with quail eggs and pancetta. The main course was grilled tuna with haricot verts.

As always, everything made by Number Two Son is both gluten-free and dairy-free.

Birds & plants on my deck, AKA the Hummingbird Tea Garden

🐦🌸🐦‍⬛ This container garden is right outside my kitchen door, a lovely instant retreat spot!
📷All of these shots—including the last one of the hummingbird—were taken from the spot where I sit in the morning as I contemplate nature, pray, read my Bible, eat breakfast, and prepare for the day.

My FIRST EVER Soil Test

Thanks to Just Good Soil, I did my first ever soil test back in early May. Here you can see how EASY it was to collect a soil sample and send it off.

I’ll do a fuller update later sometime, with more pros and cons of these products, but for now here’s what I think about the Just Good Soil Regenerative Gardening System.

The Soil Genie Test Kit is the first step in Just Good Soil's 3-step system. Thus it’s practically certain that they’ll recommend you also get the second and third parts of the system: the Essential Nutrient Protocol Kit and the Soil Supplement Protocol Kit. These are not technically fertilizers as such; they are amendments designed to make whatever nutrients are in the soil more accessible to plants. If your soil needs more help than that, as mine does, your soil test results will point you to other products to address those issues as well.

If you’ve ever done a soil test for your garden but had difficulty figuring out what ORGANIC amendments you should add, then the Just Good Soil Regenerative Gardening System is for you. They interpret the test results for you and give you SPECIFIC organic amendment recommendations. By specific I mean they provide brand names (theirs, of course, and also Down To Earth Fertilizers) along with pictures of the products and an easy way to order your personalized recommendations from them.

All this isn’t cheap, but it does take the difficulty out of interpreting soil test results. Unlike other soil tests, the results of this one are geared toward ORGANIC gardeners. In contrast, the NPK number recommendations for fertilizer that other soil tests give you are for synthetic fertilizers. If those test results show that your soil is low in nitrogen, phosphorus, and/or potassium, it’s up to you to choose organic fertilizers and amendments that are higher in those elements. And then you have to find them.

The Soil Genie test results found them for me. That's a good thing because my local big box stores, Menard's and Home Depot, don't carry things like feather meal, langbeinite, and azomite. And you don't necessarily HAVE to buy the recommended products from Just Good Soil. I shopped around and found that although Just Good Soil's prices are fair, I could still save a few bucks here and there. (See my comment below or DM me for details.)

Another plus is that Just Good Soil products are OMRI certified as organic, made in the USA, and sustainably packaged (no plastic!).

I’m sharing videos from the last two years that I never got around to posting earlier. I don’t have time to edit them all and add music and captions, which is why I didn’t post them in the first place.

Let me know if you enjoy them and/or have any questions. Thanks!

Edible flowers from my garden 🌹💠🌺
I harvested and washed these yesterday for a friend to put on the tarts she's making for a big event at our church tonight.

⛪ First Baptist Church of Downers Grove is celebrating its 175th anniversary!🎉 If you're in the area, you are welcome to join us for this historic event. I certainly hope to see all of the FBC friends among my followers there.😊
