Did you know that in 2007 William F. Sullivan Co., Inc. was featured on the PBS program Making It Here? We were featured in the episode called "What's Old Is New" at about the four and half minute mark.

I can't believe it was almost 20 years ago!

15 Minutes of Fame. We invented that in 1953.

I was a star! Now where did I put my sunglasses.........

There little in New England that hasn’t been revived, restored, recycled, or rebuilt.

Did you know that William F. Sullivan Co., Inc. has worked with the City of Holyoke repeatedly over the years by selling adjacent property we own to the City?

We sold to the City the parcel of land that the Holyoke Amtrak Station now sits on.

We sold to the City two parcels of land off of Bowers Street to develop new low income housing.

In all cases the City was cut a sweetheart deal so they could develop and improve the area.

Improving the area is something we support wholeheartedly. We made it happen.

We didn't just say words, make all kinds of promises, and then back out-- we actually did it.

Keeping our word. We invented that in 1953.

Did you know that we process all of our scrap metal mechanically with a guillotine shear and then load the finished product into one of our 60+ railcars for remelting at any of the steel mills in the United States? Torching, burn pits, weird smells, or shredding do not exist here; even though I've heard some people say otherwise. Don't believe them. The truth is right here.

My Kids Work Here. We invented that in 1953

Several weeks back I posted about all the trades we have working here at William F. Sullivan Co., Inc.

We have Crane Operators, Welders, Diesel Mechanics, Class A & B Drivers, Experienced Scrap Buyers and Sorters, Safety Experts, etc.

Our employees are very skilled and very knowledgeable about our industry. Most employees have been with us for more than 5 years, some more than 10, and a few more than 20.

I've been here since dirt was invented. Whenever that was.

The point is (contrary to some people's opinions) we are not a bunch of cave men and women sitting on 5 gallon buckets sorting scrap by hand at Mr. Sullivan's Junk Yard. We are not waiting around for that guy that promised in 1995 to come pick up some salvaged piece we found.

We are all very sophisticated and talented people that show up every morning to work hard at a manufacturing job that recycles 150 million pounds of metal a year. It's not fancy and it's not glamourous.

BUT.....

*Did you know that the average HOURLY employee at the William F. Sullivan Co., Inc makes $100,000 per year?

*Did you know that the average HOURLY employee at the William F. Sullivan Co., Inc. works 12 hours of Overtime a week?

*Did you know that the MA minimum wage is $15.00/HR and the starting HOURLY wage at William F. Sullivan Co., Inc. is $20.00/HR?

Livable Wages. We invented that in 1953.

Did You Know that in 2019 William F. Sullivan Co., Inc. filed for a permit with the City of Holyoke and MA DEP to install a new subsurface stormwater management system including re-paving the entire yard on Appleton Street?

We worked with EA Engineering and Marion Excavating to develop and install a system that would manage, treat, and discharge all of our storm water on site. This eliminated the need to discharge our stormwater into the city storm water system.

This upgrade took place over 5 years (from 2019 to 2023) and cost well over $1 million.

We operated the business the entire time. It was like operating a scrap yard on an aircraft carrier. Very difficult.

The best part is....no one forced us to do this. We did it because it is the right thing to do and we plan on operating this business for the long haul.

We invested in our future just like we did in 2015 at our Jed Days Landing property.

If you look closely you will notice that there are no "burn pits" anywhere on the property. We've been "burn pit" free since 1953.

So no burning on Main Street here.

Doing the right thing. We invented that in 1953.

So the format for today's Did You Know is slightly different because I actually have a full photo album to share. Here we go....

Did You Know that in 2013 the William F. Sullivan Co., Inc. purchased an old vacant truck terminal on Jed Days Landing and then invested over $2 million to build a brand new 18,000 square foot warehouse and renovate the old terminal? This building that opened in 2015 is now one of the nicest buildings on Main St. in Holyoke along with Marcotte Ford and US Tsubaki.

Does this look like Mr. Sullivan's Junk Yard to you?

Overachieving. We invented that in 1953.

I've had some experiences recently that made me realize most people have no idea what we actually do, who we are as people, and how important we are to the local economy. I'm going to start posting these "Did You Know's" about once a week for a while. They should be enlightening. Enjoy!
