I see it all over Florida: palm trees trimmed so high they look like feather dusters.

That is not how you keep a palm healthy. When you strip away those green fronds, you are robbing the tree of its food supply. Here in Pasco and Hernando, our sandy soil drains nutrients fast. If you over-prune, that palm starves and becomes weak in the next storm.

I was stuck in US 19 traffic today and noticed a common mistake around Holiday. People are giving their palms what folks call a hurricane cut.

I completely understand wanting to prep your yard before our Gulf Coast storm season kicks up. We all get a little nervous when the weather turns. But stripping a palm down until it looks like a feather duster actually does more harm than good.

Those green fronds on the bottom are like the tree's food factory. When you chop them all off, the palm gets weak. A healthy, full canopy is actually better at surviving those intense afternoon summer squalls. The lower fronds protect the growing center of the tree from wind and rain.
