DID YOU KNOW THE HERNANDO COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE OFFERS THE CARE LINE PROGRAM - FREE?
We wanted to share some information on our Care Line program with all of you. Our hope is, youโll share it with others who may or will benefit from this FREE program.
The Care Line program was started more than 30 years ago, under the direction of (former) Sheriff Tom Mylander. At that time, Sheriff Mylander recognized there were numerous senior citizens living alone in Hernando County, with no family or close friends nearby to check on them. Understanding the difficulties this creates for seniors, the Care Line program was implemented. The program has been operational 7 days per week/365 days per year since its implementation.
Any senior citizen, or person who is in ill health, who lives alone, or lives with a person who is also in ill health or who has diminished mental capacity (Alzheimerโs Disease or dementia) is eligible for the program. The interested person must complete an application. Once the application is submitted, a clerk will conduct an โintakeโ interview over the telephone with the โclient.โ This is done to ensure we obtain all the information we need, in the event of an emergency. During this call, the client selects the time he or she would like to call the Care Line each morning (clients call us in 15 minute increments, starting at 6 AM and ending at 9:30 AM).
The client must sign a waiver (included in the application) giving an HCSO deputy permission to force entry into his or her residence, in the event we are unable to make contact. Typically, clients provide us with information on where a key is hidden or some other way to gain entry without doing damage. Damage is always a last resort โ but not out of the question if we feel someoneโs life is in jeopardy.
We have included a copy of our Care Line brochure for your convenience. Please feel free to share it with friends, family, and residents alike. You are also welcome to share copies of the brochure with your doctors, nurses, rehab facilities, churches, etc.
Again, the program is FREE and available to Hernando County residents.
