Over the next week, we’ll be experiencing temperatures and wind chills that most residential heating systems are NOT designed for.
- Newer homes may struggle to maintain set temperature
- Older homes may not maintain temperature at all, even while the system is running continuously
- Indoor temperatures may gradually drop, and this can be normal under extreme conditions
🏠 What You Can Do to Help Your Heating System:
- Increase your thermostat 2–4 degrees above normal before the coldest temperatures arrive
- Remove programmable thermostats from setback mode and place them on permanent HOLD
- Replace your furnace or heat pump air filter
- Keep garage doors closed as much as possible
- Limit opening exterior doors
- Ensure supply and return vents are not blocked or obstructed
❄️ For High-Efficiency (90%+) Furnaces:
- Keep intake and exhaust pipes clear of ice and snow
- These are typically two white PVC pipes located on the side or back of your home (sometimes on the roof)
❗ Do NOT go on your roof to clear them
🔥 If Your Home Temperature Is Dropping:
- If your furnace is running and blowing hot air, DO NOT PANIC
- Make sure the system continues operating
- In extreme cold and wind chill, homes may not recover temperature until outdoor conditions improve
- Set your thermostat to HOLD at 68-70°F or higher
💡 Extra Tips:
- Cooking soups or stews and boiling water can help add humidity and warmth
❌ DO NOT use ovens or grills to heat your home
- Please check on neighbors and elderly residents during this extreme cold
