Deteriorating ductwork, humidity issues, and outdated controls were impacting classrooms across Hardin-Jefferson ISD. The district partnered with E3 to take action, and the Texas Energy Managers Association (TEMA) recently recognized the incredible transformation as the 2026 Project of the Year.
In our latest video case study, Fritz Decker, Director of Maintenance and Custodial, explains how the partnership drastically improved learning environments. By implementing comprehensive HVAC and lighting upgrades, the district slashed its energy use intensity from approximately 138 kBtu/sf/year to a projected 28 to 31 kBtu/sf/year—outperforming the efficiency levels many newer facilities strive to achieve. Just as importantly, individual thermostat controls and upgraded lighting have virtually eliminated teacher comfort complaints.
