Southern Native Landscape Design

Southern Native Landscape Design Landscape Design and Consultation I wanted to take the opportunity here to share a little about my background. This choice was much to my father's chagrin.

I can imagine how tough it would be as the consumer to blindly trust that someone will do a good job for them. I began my career in landscape design when I was just 19 years old when I decided to change my college major from engineering to horticulture. Not only did I jump in with both feet to with regards to my education but I also did a great deal of hands on learning. I worked in the Universit

y of Tennessee's trial gardens for 6 years while pursuing my undergraduate and graduate degrees. After college I began my career in plant sciences while working for the Forest Service and National Park Service as a botanist. I am thankful for this experience as it taught me a great deal about ecosystems and how plants relate to their environment. I also learned a bunch of native plants! Unfortunately I was not able to make a career with the park Service. Thus at the age of 25 I started my first landscape design business. Since then I have worked in 3 states and designed 1,000's of landscapes of all types and sizes. Thank you for looking at my page. Please let me know if you have any feedback or input.

Carolina jessamine blooming on a diamond pattern trellis! 🤩
I love using these native vines for this due to their growth habit- It doesn't have aerial roots that grab on to the surface, so it's not as likely to damage your home. ✅

Plus it smells AMAZING!
(I find it very similar to jasmine, which is not hardy in our zone.)

I just received these 3D images of a plan I put together that were created by the pool installer. I have been reluctant to add 3D images to my services because I feel it could lead to unrealistic expectations of live plants that will look sparse when planted, take time to fill in, and bloom at different times. However, it is fun to see!

It's seasonal color planning time.
Looking back through past projects and the days installed containers. I had fun planting these. I love finding fun color and texture combinations.
There's a bit more to good container combinations than the spiller, thriller, filler rule of thumb. Other factors to consider are light and water needs, growth habit, heat/cold tolerance, and growth rate. It can be overwhelming but just try and have fun with it.
Hopefully these will inspire you to try new things this spring.

I had the pleasure of visiting this newly finished home on the caney fork river. I was dying to see the inside and it did not disappoint. The landscape was only planted a few weeks ago during the hottest time of year coupled with extreme drought conditions. The day I visited was rainy so it was difficult to capture the full scope. I will have better photos to share in due time. All that to say, the landscape looks fabulous and will only get better as time progresses. Full of native species with a natural feel which speaks to the environment the home is located. Great job on the install . The homeowners couldn’t be happier.

I had the pleasure of visiting a property today which was mud and empty space the last time I laid eyes on it. The client owns a local landscape lighting company so it was important to add trees with interesting branching structure for up lighting. The landscape is looking fantastic for one year of growth and not to mention the drought and exceptional heat we’ve had. On this particular project, I collaborated with on the space and it turned out beautifully.

I was just sent these aerials from the installer and they really show the scale and complexity of the garden. This design and install were a great challenge for the both of us. Great job guys! I had the pleasure of walking the garden recently with the homeowners who are new to vegetable gardening. They are really embracing it.
