These are 9 shade or partial shade plants that will do well under trees:

1. Hosta – Renowned for its deep green leaves, it thrives in shade and comes in many varieties.

2. Ferns – Especially varieties like the Japanese Painted Fern or Lady Fern.

3. Astilbe – Produces feathery plumes of flowers and loves moist, shaded areas.

4. Lungwort (Pulmonaria) – Enjoys shade with dramatic speckled leaves and spring blooms.

5. Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense) – Heart-shaped leaves ground cover.

6. Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum) – Arching stems and bell-shaped flowers.

7. Heuchera (Coral Bells) – Foliage-colored, shade-tolerant.

8. Liriope (Lilyturf) – Grass-like plant that is often used as a ground cover under trees.

Do you have exposed tree roots in your yard? Tree roots are often much shallower than most realize and as a tree matures, more exposed roots may begin to show.

A tree’s root system serves four primary functions – anchorage, absorption, storage and conduction. These functions play a critical role in the health of trees, so care should be taken to avoid injuring exposed roots, especially when mowing or trimming your lawn. Injuries to exposed roots can also become a point of entry for disease or decay.

The best solution to avoid injury is to cover the roots with mulch but avoid heavier and more dense objects like walkways or flowerbeds. Apply a thin layer (no more than 3 inches) of organic mulch under the tree’s canopy and over the exposed roots. Mulch not only protects the exposed roots from injury, but also provides other benefits like regulating soil temperatures, conserving water and improving soil health.
