Some retro repairs!

Mid 1980’s Kohler widespread lavy faucet with side sprayer & Kohler bidet rebuilt.

Both fixtures were in-operable. The home was sold to the new owners and these fixtures sat for extended periods of time unused. Handles were unable to be turned on, seized into place and when they were turned on with force, they did not shut off correctly.

Rebuild stems with new washers, packings and greased. Bidet diverter repaired.

Now these fixtures are easy to turn on and shut off without excessive force.

These are what make my day, tearing into old fixtures and making them like new again. Old fixtures were built to last and most importantly, repairable with minimal parts.

Old corroded galvanized water line problems

The issue:

internal corrosion inside the remaining 1/2” galvanized water lines from the 1940’s in the basement after the meter, and despite the extremely high water pressure from the city, barely enough flow volume was present at the faucets.

The solution:

Repiped all existing galvanized piping in the basement with type L copper piping, installed a WATTS PRV (Pressure Reduction Valve) and secondary ball valve after the meter.

The extreme high water pressure was corrected to a safe 65PSI, with new 1/2” water lines that are fully unrestricted supplying plenty of flow to the fixtures and faucets in the home!

Some recent work wrapped up!

- Two toilet replacements - one American Standard, one Kohler

- Two high end Moen faucet/drain installs

- Delta Monitor shower valve rebuild

The valve location behind the one toilet was roughed in incorrectly, way too close to the center of the toilet fl**ge location and not far enough left. Thankfully, American Standard’s Reliant toilet base had a small enough base along the back to accommodate the valve location (slab on grade, no ability to relocate valve stub out without major work)

The upstairs toilet installation was very standard, valve in the correct location so the desired Kohler Highline toilet was a perfect fit (Kohler toilets have a longer more oval base, often interfere with baseboard radiators or water line rough placement)

2x Moen Dartmoor model single handle faucets installed with new pop up drain assemblies, angle stops, traps and threaded tailpiece. Overall these faucets were very heavy duty and had quite a bit of weight to them opposed to many new ones and work beautifully.

And lastly, the Delta Monitor shower valve was leaking, a continuous drip from the shower head. New cartridge installation with seats and springs/resurfaced valve took care of the leak!

A little customer supplied electric tankless whole house water heater installation swap out!

The old unit failed only after a few years but this was due to hard water. A water softener was installed recently. With the new tankless unit installed in the addition to the water softener this unit will last much longer.

If you are considering a tankless water heater installation - perfectly soft water is a must for longevity of the unit. Have your water tested prior to installation.

The Hellertown Borough Authority is currently working on a water main break in the area of West Saucon Street between Main and Front Streets. Customers in that area may experience discolored, low or no water pressure. When the water pressure returns, please run your cold water until it runs clear. We will keep those in the affected areas updated. Thank you for your patience.

The customer had a cracked 1930’s Kohler toilet bowl but wanted to retain the original look to the bathroom. I don’t get the opportunity to restore antique fixtures much but this is where my pride is, in the old quality fixtures.

Sourced a 1931 Kohler low tank toilet bowl from my archives, ordered all new tank parts to period correct era. 2” tank elbow, Mansfield Brass 205 flush valve with tank ball and lift wires, 2” spud, replaced the valve & ni**le with new escutcheon. Original dual action Kohler handle was kept.

The old toilet was never pulled since it was installed in the 1930s, set in plaster. The area was cleaned off around the fl**ge and the replacement bowl was set on a new standard wax and 5/16” heavy duty bolts.

The tank was acid cleaned and new parts cut to fit and installed.

Flush tested with a new old school wooden seat to match the door frame color to the left.

The customer was very happy with the restoration.

Pressure Reducing Valve Installation

A customer reached out about a failed PRV which resulted in premature wear of his faucet cartridges/toilet fill valves.

Water pressure fluctuates throughout the day depending on your location and when residents on the block are using or not using water. In this instance, the highest reading was around 120PSI, this morning a reading of 95 PSI was discovered.

Replacement of the old PRV with a new Watts PRV was performed and adjusted to 65PSI.

It is very important to check your water pressure bi-annually to ensure your readings are below 70PSI. Water pressure over 70PSI for any duration of time will often lead to faucet cartridge/toilet fill valve/expansion tank and more plumbing failures.
