Frost reaches the Back Mountain and the ridges around Hazleton weeks before it reaches the valley, and the outdoor spigot is the first casualty every year.

Here is the part most people get wrong. A garden hose left connected traps water inside the spigot and the pipe behind it. When that water freezes, the pipe cracks inside the wall, not outside. Nobody knows until spring, when the first use of the hose sends water into the basement or the wall cavity.

Before the first cold night:

🔵 Disconnect every hose and drain it. Store it somewhere it will not freeze.
🔵 Shut off the interior valve to each outdoor spigot if the house has one.
🔵 Open the spigot outside so any water left inside can drain.
🔵 Slip an insulated cover over the spigot for the season.

On a humid day like this, pay attention to the doors. Wood swells when it takes on moisture, and a door that sticks today and swings free on a dry day is doing what wood does.

But one door that sticks while the rest of the house is fine is telling a different story. That room has moisture the others do not.

What to check when a single door or window binds:

🔵 The wall and floor around that frame for dampness or soft spots.
🔵 The ceiling above for stains, especially under a bathroom.

The first cold night on the mountain is not far off, and the first fire of the season is the one that finds last winter's mistake.

Every wood fire leaves creosote inside the chimney, a tar-like coating that builds layer on layer. Get enough of it and one hot fire can ignite the whole flue. Chimney fires burn at over 2,000 degrees and can spread into the framing around the chimney.

Before lighting anything this fall:

🔵 Have the chimney swept and inspected, once a year for regular burners.
🔵 Look for shiny black buildup inside the flue, that is the dangerous kind.
🔵 Check the cap and screen so animals and debris are not nesting up top.
🔵 Burn seasoned hardwood. Green wood builds creosote fastest.

The open-up checklist:

🔵 Walk the ceilings and corners with a flashlight, looking for water stains.
🔵 Sniff hard when the door first opens. Musty means moisture got in.

Firewood deliveries are starting across the Back Mountain, and where that wood gets stacked matters more than most people think.

A woodpile against the siding does three things, and none of them are good. It traps moisture against the wall so the siding never dries. It gives carpenter ants and termites a covered bridge into the house. And it blocks the airflow that keeps that side of the home dry.

Stack it right:

🔵 Keep the pile at least a few feet off the house, ideally farther.
🔵 Get it up off the ground on rails or pallets so the bottom row breathes.
🔵 Cover the top, not the sides. Wrapped wood sweats and molds.
🔵 Bring in only what burns in a few days.

Pool closing season is starting around the Hazleton area and the Back Mountain, and there is one question worth answering before the pump starts: where is all that water going to go?

Lowering a pool means moving thousands of gallons, and pushed the wrong way it ends up against a foundation, in a neighbor's yard, or flooding a septic field.

Before draining down:

🔵 Run discharge hoses well away from the house and downhill of it.
🔵 Keep the flow off the septic field and away from the well.
🔵 Drain in stages so the ground can take it, not all at once.
🔵 Watch the basement during and after. Saturated ground finds foundation cracks.

Mostly sunny and crisp across the Hazleton area and the Back Mountain today, low 60s and dry. Fall always shows up on the mountain before it reaches the valley, and today feels like the first taste of it.

A day like this is worth using. Every closed-up space that spent the summer holding humidity can breathe today.

Prop doors open for a few hours:

Window AC units start coming out across the mountain in the next few weeks. Here is the mistake that shows up every fall: pulling a unit, wrapping it, and shelving it wet.

Every window AC holds condensate inside the pan and coils. Sealed in a closet or a garage, that trapped water grows mold all winter, and next June it blows straight into the room.

When the unit comes out:

🔵 Tilt it outdoors and let the pan drain completely.
🔵 Run it on fan-only for a few hours to dry the coils.
🔵 Clean or replace the filter before storage.
🔵 Store it upright, uncovered or loosely covered, somewhere dry.
