Not every outdoor outlet is built for wet conditions. A GFCI outlet is what protects you outdoors, the kind with the little TEST and RESET buttons on the face. It watches for a fault and cuts power in a fraction of a second, before a shock can happen.

If your outdoor outlets don't have those buttons, check before you plug in a month of decorations. An electrician can add GFCI protection quickly, and it's one of the more important upgrades for anything running outside.

Your water heater works harder as the incoming water cools for winter, and sediment building up in the tank makes it work harder still. A tune-up flushes that sediment and inspects the worn components, so the unit runs efficiently through the season it is needed most.

A single outdoor outlet can only handle so much. Once the lights and the inflatable are both running off the same circuit, you’re asking a lot of one line.

A few habits keep it safe. Spread your decorations across more than one outlet instead of loading everything onto one. Use cords and timers rated for outdoor use, since indoor cords aren't built for moisture. Plugging into a GFCI outlet also helps, since it shuts off power the instant it senses a fault.

October is here, but that does not mean power outage season is over.

The Atlantic hurricane season continues through November, and Tidewater also has fall wind, winter weather, and ordinary grid failures to think about after tropical season winds down.
