One of the biggest ways to detect where airflow is coming from and to help us locate where drafty issues need to be sealed, is using what is called a blower door. This is absolutely a must where/when possible to do. We literally create a suction from inside the home, to out, helping us pinpoint areas of draft throughout the house. A blower door test can also assure that all work done air sealing and/or insulating will be effective as possible, while holding us accountable and justifying time spent sealing and insulating .We typically do a blower door air flow test before starting any work to see how tight the home is and after completion to see what the final air flow reduction is in the home. There have been some cases where a home is already tight enough where we would limit what we seal and/or insulate..That's why this is a must when possible , especially with smaller homes.

Infrared technology is KEY to finding " cold spots " when insulating outer walls of older homes.. Quite often older insulation blown( cellulose, blown rockwool , blown fiberglass ) into walls decades ago has " settled " or " separated " in miscellaneous areas of outer walls..Cold spots/walls show up purple/black on camera and we can also see temperature difference as well ..This allows us to pinpoint/dense pack cellulose insulation into these areas and quite possibly we can reblow the entire wall cavities if the insulation is relatively " loose " in the walls..The insulation machines now are well equipped with correct pressure/cellulose mixture settings to fill walls and ensure settling will never be an issue again down the road.

Insulating/dense packing garage ceilings with heated living space above with class 1 all borate cellulose insulation..ie family room / bedroom(s)..etc
One huge cold trouble spot in most homes with garages "built into" homes is that most floors above are cold/freezing in winter. The problem is true for older and even newer homes.. Typically older homes have either no insulation or little insulation between the garage ceiling and floor above leaving cold air to travel between each bay.. Most bays being 6-10 inches with virtually little existing insulation. Newer homes typically are left with 2-4 inches of space that can still be filled!! We drill 2 inch holes as needed to allow us to pressure blow in cellulose insulation by tube, filling each cavity full..All holes drilled are patched with lightweight Spackle after install. This can make a huge comfort difference for the rooms above and save you money!

After picture of a freshly blown attic recently to R-49 ( 15 inches and current Mass code ) with cellulose insulation. We exclusively use Class 1 Greenfiber CEL-PAK loose fill ( Borate only blend ), which is thee best , dry application cellulose you can get in the US...Cellulose should look " even and flat " when blown for the best even coverage...Also.....The attic should be air sealed prior to blowing ( chimney chases sealed with flashing and hi temp caulk, plumbing chases, open top plates sealed with foam ) and bathroom exhaust fans vented out if existing, to prevent any moisture issues in the attic...Lastly, attic ventilation is HUGE.. Depending on square footage, we calculate the amount of suggested ventilation needed for it to breathe correctly to ensure proper airflow..

Steam pipe insulation is a MUST for steam boilers to keep the system working as efficient as possible if the pipes are currently uninsulated.. We use a 1 inch wall fiberglass wrap with an All service jacket white covering ( ASJ ). We try to encapsulate all exposed ( bare ) steam pipe including covering all Elbows, tees and 45° joints..All seams are taped with ASJ tape for the cleanest look possible.....Here are a few pictures of some boiler steam pipes wrapped...

Custom made/sized doors on-site insulated with 1 inch Thermax foamboard .. Most applications include a new pressure treated wood frame , door made with primed tounge and grooved bead board with all hardware necessary and also fully weatherstripped.. These doors are typically built for "basement to bulkhead" openings which are almost always not a standard size door opening...Typical install time from start to finish is 3-4 hours most applications..

Insulated attic staircase covers save a ton of $$$....We use a product called a " Thermadome " .. Adding an extra 2 inch layer of Thermax foam board to the standard 1 1/2" Thermadome box for extra R-value.... The staircase frame is airsealed with caulk and foam as needed and a plywood platform is added if needed so the Thermadome has a tight seal when sitting in place.. It can be easily lifted/tipped to the side to access the attic...
