Dare County has issued a mandatory evacuation order for all visitors on Hatteras Island, effective tonight, Friday, October 16, at 8:00 PM.

The safety of our guests, homeowners, and community remains our top priority.

If you are a current guest or have an upcoming reservation, Midgett Realty will be communicating important information via email and text message to the primary leaseholder. Please keep an eye on your messages for updates.

🌊 **Hatteras Island Coastal Storm Update – October 16, 2026**

Another coastal storm is expected to bring potentially hazardous conditions to the Outer Banks beginning late Saturday, October 17, and continuing into early next week.

According to Dare County Emergency Management, the storm may bring strong northeast winds, dangerous surf, beach erosion, coastal flooding, and ocean overwash. These conditions could impact travel along N.C. Highway 12, including possible delays or temporary road closures.

While the exact timing and severity of the storm remain uncertain, we encourage everyone currently visiting Hatteras Island, as well as those planning to arrive this weekend, to stay informed and plan accordingly.

With NC12 open, we will be closing our emergency ferry route this afternoon, with a final departure from Stumpy Point at 2pm and a final departure from Rodanthe at 3:30pm. After ferries are repositioned tonight, the Hatteras-Ocracoke route will resume a full schedule tomorrow!

Dare County has announced a phased reentry plan for southbound traffic on NC12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe: Wednesday at 7 a.m., southbound traffic will only be allowed for Priority 1, 2, and 3 individuals, as well as for Ocracoke residents. No visitor access on Wednesday.

Then on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 a.m., southbound traffic will be available to the general public, including visitors. At that point, all entry restrictions will be lifted. Details: https://bit.ly/4dZiHj1

Again, the area near the Pea Island Visitor Center will be a one-lane gravel road, with traffic control regulated by automated signals. Please drive slowly and with extreme caution through the area. There will be sand and water on the road, and our crews will be out in force making further repairs and re-establishing a protective dune line.

Important information for those who are still on-island.

NEWS RELEASE: Cape Hatteras National Seashore Reports Status Updates After Recent Coastal Storm

Cape Hatteras National Seashore experienced significant impacts from the recent coastal storm. Dare County has declared a State of Emergency for Hatteras Island. As a result, non-resident travel to Hatteras Island is currently prohibited.

Visitors and residents should be aware of the following damages and impacts.

Avon Fishing Pier Damage
The Avon Fishing Pier sustained structural damage during the storm. The Seashore is actively engaged in conversations with the pier’s lessee to evaluate the extent of the damage and determine next steps.

Rodanthe Beach Closure
The beach remains closed from the northern boundary of Rodanthe to the pier in Rodanthe. Entering the ocean should be avoided due to the potential for poor water quality associated with damaged septic systems.

Hatteras Island Beach Impacts
Some public beach access boardwalks have been buried or damaged from wave action. A significant amount of private beach stairs and boardwalk decking, septic system parts, and wooden and metal debris from houses are littering the beach. Seashore staff and volunteers are working to clean up these items during routine patrols.

Off-Road Vehicle Access
Most off-road vehicle ramps have reopened. Check real-time updates at: go.nps.gov/beachaccess. Routes may be hazardous due to the presence of debris.

Campground Status
Cape Point and Frisco campgrounds remain closed at this time due to Dare County’s State of Emergency declaration. The campground is only open to campers that have not been able to leave Hatteras Island due to limited transportation options.

Updated Travel Information
The Seashore recommends visitors with upcoming travel plans to Hatteras Island monitor drivenc.gov and ncferry.org for the status of N.C. Highway 12 and ferry travel and the Dare County website for updates to its State of Emergency declaration.

🚨UPDATE FROM NCDOT | Sunday, September 27th 🚨

NCDOT Ferry Service Between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe to Begin Today
24-hour service to begin at 11 a.m.; Dare County entry restrictions in place

STUMPY POINT – The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division will begin 24-hour emergency ferry service between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe at 11 a.m. Sunday, providing a transportation link between Hatteras Island and the North Carolina mainland while a section of N.C. 12 remains closed.

The schedule for the emergency route for Sept. 27 will be as follows:

Rodanthe to Stumpy Point: 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m., 11 p.m.
Stumpy Point to Rodanthe: 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m., 11 p.m.

Beginning Sept. 28, the schedule will be:

Rodanthe to Stumpy Point: 2 a.m., 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m.,5 p.m., 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Stumpy Point to Rodanthe: 2 a.m., 5 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

The Stumpy Point ferry terminal is at 100 Log Storage Road, Stumpy Point. The Rodanthe ferry terminal is at 23170 Myrna Peters Road, Rodanthe.

This three-boat, 24-hour schedule will stay the same during the operation of the Rodanthe-Stumpy Point emergency route.

The schedule and updates will also be published on NCDOT’s Ferry Facebook and N.C. 12 Facebook social media pages.

Dare County’s emergency entry restrictions will be in place for all departures to Rodanthe. That means that ONLY essential personnel, critical business vendors, and permanent Hatteras Island residents will be allowed onto Rodanthe-bound ferries. Law enforcement will be onsite to ensure compliance with entry restrictions. Visitors will NOT be allowed onto Rodanthe-bound ferries at this time.

Departures to Stumpy Point will be loaded on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority loading given to vendors returning from their deliveries.

Ferry space is limited, and travelers should expect long lines and significant delays.

A one-way trip between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe takes approximately two hours.

N.C. 12 is currently closed between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe due to road damage caused by this week’s nor’easter. State transportation crews have assessed damage to N.C. 12 and will begin to construct a temporary road as soon as conditions allow.

Travelers should continue to monitor official NCDOT and Dare County information for updates on ferry operations and the status of N.C. 12.

Ocracoke and Ferries Update

N.C. 12 on the north end of Ocracoke remains closed due to ongoing ocean overwash. On Sunday, NCDOT crews are continuing to clear sand and water so the road can be reopened as soon as possible. The Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route will resume service once N.C. 12 is reopened.

NCDOT continues to provide ferry service on the routes between Ocracoke Village and the mainland (Cedar Island and Swan Quarter). Reservations are highly recommended and are available online or by calling 1-800-BY-FERRY.

The other ferry routes (Bayview-Aurora, Currituck-Knotts Island, Southport-Fort Fisher) are operating on their normal schedules. The Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach ferry route is running on a reduced schedule.

A couple of reminders for our on-island guests:

1. ORV Ramps remain temporarily closed due to hazardous driving conditions. Per Hatteras National Seashore, as the ramps begin to reopen to vehicles, the Seashore's beach access webpage will update.

2. Please be aware that standing water, particularly on roadways, is salt water, which can be highly corrosive and damaging to vehicles. If travel through a flooded roadway is unavoidable, please proceed slowly and with extreme caution. Driving at a reduced speed will also help minimize splashing and prevent salt water from being sprayed onto other vehicles and nearby property.

3. Due to the ongoing storm conditions, it is imperative that everyone stay out of the water. A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 8pm Saturday. If you or someone else needs assistance, please dial 911 and know your approximate location on the beach or sound side areas. Follow Hatteras Island Rescue Squad for ocean reports and related updates.

4. For the most up-to-date information regarding the closure of NC Highway 12, please follow NCDOT NC 12 or visit DriveNC.

5. We understand that the ongoing closure of NC 12 has created significant uncertainty and inconvenience for those traveling to and from Hatteras Island. Please remember that the road closure and flooding are also impacting our team as well as all other local businesses. As of this morning, Friday, September 25, Highway 12 remains closed. Our Hatteras and Avon offices are open, however, due to flooding conditions throughout Hatteras Island, we are operating with limited personnel today, as some team members are unable to safely reach our offices.
