Finishing touches. That's what separates a roof that looks good from a roof that looks right.

Once the shingles are down, it's all in the details — tucking in trim around the eaves, keeping every line straight, making sure nothing's left loose or half-done just because it's out of sight from the ground. Taking a quiet Sunday afternoon to look back at the hard work the crew put in this past week.

When you spend your life up on a roof, you learn to appreciate the results of honest, blue-collar labor. Three feet. That's the minimum amount of ice and water shield required in the heated part of a house here in Hastings and on our jobs, that's not a corner we cut. This one's showing the decking prepped and that shield laid down clean before a single shingle goes on. It's what stops ice dams from backing water up under your roof come winter. Skip it or skimp on it, and you're setting yourself up for a leak down the road. We do it right the first time, every time. 🏠

Straight as a string—that’s the only way a ridge line should look when a roof replacement is done right.

Every single course of these architectural shingles is perfectly lined up, and that ridge cap runs dead straight from end to end. West Michigan has been taking a beating from these recent storms, and we’ve got high winds and heavy rain rolling into Hastings and Barry County again tonight. When a roof gets too old, those storms will find every single weak spot.

We recently did a full tear-off on a local A-frame cabin, and once we got the old shingles off, we found dark spots scattered all across the OSB wood decking. Those dark spots are small leaks. Homeowners usually don't notice them from the ground until the wood starts rotting and the ceiling starts sagging. We got all that decking cleaned up and laid down a brand-new, secure roof before the next round of weather hit.

If your shingles are getting up there in age, don't wait for a major leak to tell you there's a problem.

Raised them, fed them, taught them everything they know — and now they're on my roofs. Worth every bit of it.

Both boys up there rolling out underlayment on fresh decking after a full tear-off. This is the part of the job that makes or breaks a roof — and I trust these two to do it right because I trained them myself.

Full tear-off day — old shingles off, decking exposed, and we find out what's actually been hiding up there. Sometimes it's fine. Sometimes it's not. Either way, we tell you the truth before anything new goes on.

This is the layer most homeowners never see — but it's one of the most important parts of a solid roof. We tear it off, check the decking, and build it back up the right way.
