The original Greek Revival facade was carefully restored to preserve the character and classical proportions of this historic Cape Cod home. An addition at the rear was designed to be compatible with the historic house without replicating it. Like the best vernacular architecture, it fits comfortably within its context while also being distinctly of its own time.

The view side of the house is nearly all windows. We pulled the outdoor stairs away from the facade and put it at an angle, making it more sculptural and blocking less of the adjacent screened-in porch. Decorative arches make the underside appealing but also brace the structure for stability. As evening settles in, the firepit takes center stage and the house glows behind.

Located at the end of a long drive, this Cape Cod house has a welcoming presence on arrival. Larger Alaskan yellow cedar shingles and slightly oversized windows reduce the scale at the front, while a traditional entry porch, with substantial columns set on low walls, provides a strong visual focus.

PSD is excited to share “Shingle Style Houses: The Evolution of an Inventive Architecture,” a new book written by PSD Design Principal John DaSilva, to be released at the end of August.

Featuring 28 projects by architects across the United States and Canada, including five PSD homes, the book explores the enduring principles of the Shingle Style and the many ways architects continue to reinterpret them today.

To celebrate its release, John will discuss the book at Rizzoli Bookstore in New York City on Thursday, August 27 at 6pm. He’ll be joined by Thomas Kligerman of Kligerman Architecture & Design and Michael McClung of Shope Reno Wharton, with the conversation moderated by Kyle Hoepner.
