As the days get shorter, we take advantage of all the available daylight to train our new members on pump training. Tonight we had Probationary Firefighter Curtin out at Kilowatt Park learning how to secure a water source in rural areas.

The Hartford Fire Department is grateful to Bruce and Gayle Barrington of Quechee for their generous donation of $10,000 in recognition of the care they received from Fire Station 2. The gift will be used specifically for patient services and enhancing personnel well-being.

After three medical emergencies this summer, Bruce and Gayle praised the team’s prompt, skilled, and compassionate response. Their generosity reflects the meaningful impact our first responders have on the lives of community members.

Thank you, Bruce and Gayle, for your kind words and for recognizing the dedication of our emergency personnel.

Over the weekend, Harford’s Public Safety Mechanic Paul Saucier volunteered to take our rescue truck to two fire safety awareness parades in Claremont, NH, and Bellows Falls, VT. The trip even earned us an award for the furthest travel distance!

Paul chose to donate his time to help showcase our Fire Department and bring recognition to the work our team does for the community.

Thank you, Paul, for going the extra mile to represent our Fire Department and the Town!

Fall Heating Season

As the weather starts to cool, many of us are turning on our home heating systems for the first time this season. To keep your home and family safe, please take a moment to ensure everything is ready for safe operation.

• Check all smoke detectors and replace batteries if needed.
• Have your chimney cleaned and inspected before using fireplaces or wood stoves.
• Have your heating system serviced by a licensed technician to ensure it’s operating safely and efficiently.
• Prevent carbon monoxide injuries by checking CO detectors and making sure fuel‑burning appliances are venting properly.
• If you ever experience smoke, fire, or a carbon monoxide alarm in your home, evacuate immediately and call 911.

Staying proactive helps prevent emergencies and keeps our community safe as we head into the colder months.

Structure Fire – 300 South Street, Wilder, VT

At 7:24 a.m. on September 18, 2026, the Hartford Fire Department was dispatched on a first-alarm assignment to a reported structure fire at 300 South Street in Wilder.

The first arriving unit, the Lebanon Fire Chief, arrived on scene at 07:30 and reported heavy fire and smoke showing from a first‑floor window and smoke issuing from the second floor of the residence. Based on conditions, a second alarm was requested at 07:37.

Fire crews conducted an aggressive interior attack, bringing the fire under control at 07:49.

Three occupants were inside the residence at the time of the fire. They awoke to smoke and fire conditions and self‑evacuated prior to the arrival of fire units. One adult male occupant was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

There were three dogs in the home at the time of the fire. One survived, and two were deceased.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced occupants.
Mutual aid assistance on the first alarm was provided by Lebanon, Hanover, and Windsor Fire Departments, with additional thanks extended to all responding agencies for their support.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Hartford Fire Department is pleased to welcome several new personnel who began their assignments earlier this month. These staffing additions are the result of two lieutenant retirements and the vacancy created by the Deputy Chief retirement, which allowed the hiring of two entry-level firefighters to support operational readiness and support our restructuring.

Elissa Levin Maxham – Probationary Firefighter (PFF)
Adam Curtin‑Sykes – Probationary Firefighter (PFF)
