On Sunday morning, the Norwich community gathered to celebrate the official ribbon cutting for the new John B. Stanton Elementary School, a milestone years in the making and the first completed school in the City’s comprehensive School Construction Program.
As Representative Derell Wilson noted during Saturday’s ribbon cutting, this project began with a groundbreaking in the rain and, fittingly, reached its ribbon cutting on another rainy day. The weather may not have cooperated, but the significance of the moment certainly came through.
Throughout the ceremony, speakers reflected on the challenges of the former Stanton building and celebrated what this new school represents for Norwich students, educators, and families.
As Superintendent Susan Lessard shared, this school was built for its students. That message was echoed throughout the morning: Norwich believes in its children, is invested in their success, and is committed to providing the environments they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
The project also reflects the extraordinary commitment of Norwich voters, taxpayers, City leaders, Board of Education members, school staff, the School Building Committee, state legislators, and the full design and construction team. With state reimbursement at 80 percent, the program is helping make meaningful school improvements possible while reducing the long-term impact on local taxpayers.
