Did you know? Water expands about 9% when it freezes. Water in a small crack or gap now can freeze this winter and pry it wide open.

I'm Joseth Castellanos with JC Carpentry & Remodeling LLC. We're based in Harrisonburg, and we also work in Waynesboro, Staunton, Charlottesville, and the surrounding areas. We do carpentry and remodeling — kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, tile, doors and trim, decks and pergolas, custom woodworking, electrical, plumbing, furniture assembly, TV and art hanging, and small repairs. Fall is the time to get ahead of winter:

• Clear gutters and downspouts so water runs away from the house, not into it
• Seal gaps around windows and doors before drafts and water get in
• Refresh worn paint and finish on exposed wood before it rots over the winter

Thinking about new countertops? Signs it's time

• Stains, burns, or cracks that won't come out
• Seams separating, edges chipping or lifting
• Water damage or swelling around the sink
• Looks dated next to the rest of your kitchen

What decides the job is the material and your kitchen's shape — corners, sink and stove cutouts, and where seams land. Measuring and templating first makes the install sit flat and tight.

Thinking about your kitchen cabinets? Here's how to tell what they need

• Doors and drawers that stick, sag, or won't line up
• Finish peeling or water-damaged around the sink
• Boxes still solid, but the color or style is dated
• A layout that doesn't work — dead corners, wasted space

If the boxes are solid, refinishing and new hardware can change the whole look without tearing the kitchen apart. If the layout is the problem or the boxes are damaged, that's when replacement makes more sense.
