Excited to see our Sugar Maples flex in the upcoming years!
š STATE TREE SPOTLIGHT: NEW YORK š
This weekās state tree is the sugar maple (Acer saccharum), designated New Yorkās official state tree in 1956! Famous for its maple syrup producing sap and brilliant autumn foliage, this beautiful hardwood brings shades of yellow, orange, and red to the landscape.
š³ A tree for generations
Sugar maples typically grow 60ā75 feet tall in landscapes, with a canopy spreading 40ā50 feet wide. Under favorable conditions, they can live for 300ā400 years! Their strong, hard wood is also valued for furniture and flooring.
š Recognizing a sugar maple
Look for leaves with five main lobes, arranged in opposite pairs along the twigs. Its paired, winged seedsāthe familiar maple āhelicoptersāāhelp carry the next generation on the wind.
š± Can we grow it in South Dakota?
YESāwith the right location and care. South Dakotaās state forestry list recommends sugar maple cultivars such as āGreen Mountain,ā āFall Fiesta,ā and āLegacyā for eastern South Dakota.
Sugar maples prefer moist, well-drained soil and need adequate water during dry periods. Alkaline soil can be a limitation: āGreen Mountainā and āFall Fiestaā have poor alkaline-soil tolerance, while āLegacyā is rated moderate.
For western South Dakota and the Black Hills, sugar maple is generally a less dependable choice. A soil test and advice from a local Extension office or knowledgeable nursery can help determine whether your particular site is suitable.
From sweet syrup to spectacular fall color, New Yorkās state tree offers plenty to appreciate. And those little āhelicopterā seedsāwith wings that spin as they fallācan provide hours of amusement for children! š
