🌿 Let’s make variegated Monsteras a little less confusing! 🌿

Thai Constellation, Albo, Mint, White Monster… what’s actually the difference?! 🤔

They can look surprisingly similar, and the names get thrown around SO much that it can be hard to keep track.

So here’s a quick breakdown of 4 different types of variegated Monsteras and what makes each one unique! 🌱🤍

🚨 PLANT CRIMES: PART 1 🚨

I love my plants… but some of them are absolutely committing crimes against me. 😂

🌱 Yellowing leaves — suspicious behavior.
🍂 Brown leaves — straight to jail.
🪴 Falling off the shelf and launching dirt EVERYWHERE — aggravated assault.
🍃 Broken leaves — property damage.
🥴 Torn/distorted leaves — what exactly happened here?
🤨 A leaf with ZERO variegation on a variegated plant — fraud
💀 Completely rotted and dead — MURDER

And somehow I still look at every single one and say, “I love you.” 😂

🌵 So… what exactly is “stress coloration” in succulents?

That gorgeous red, pink, purple, orange, or even deep burgundy coloring you see on some succulents can be a response to intense light exposure. ☀️

When a succulent receives strong light, it can produce protective pigments such as anthocyanins and carotenoids that help protect its cells from the effects of excess light and UV radiation. These pigments can act as a sort of natural sunscreen, which is what creates those beautiful color changes. 🌈

And despite the word “stress,” this isn’t necessarily a bad thing! In the right conditions, light stress is a normal protective response that allows the plant to better cope with high light levels.

That said, there’s an important distinction between stress coloration and sunburn. Gradually increasing a succulent’s light can encourage beautiful coloration, while suddenly exposing a plant to intense sunlight can cause actual damage like bleached, brown, crispy, or translucent patches that are signs that the plant has gone too far.

So when your succulent develops those gorgeous colors in brighter light, it may not be unhappy at all, it may simply be protecting itself and showing off while it does it. 😍🌵

Which plant are YOU most embarrassed to admit you own? 😂🌿

Mine? Calatheas 🫢

I swear, every time Calatheas come up in the plant community, somebody is ready to tell you how much they hate them, how dramatic they are, or that they belong straight in the garbage. And yet… here I am, openly admitting that I actually own them. 😂

But your answer doesn’t have to be an ugly plant, a dying plant, or even a “bad” plant!

Maybe it’s a plant that’s considered overrated, boring, basic, difficult, or just an unpopular opinion within the plant community. Maybe it’s a plant everyone else seems to love that you secretly can’t stand. 👀

Thrips… I’m coming for you. 🫡

I have officially reached the point where I feel like I’ve tried EVERYTHING to get these thrips under control. Sprays, repeated treatments, different methods… and somehow these tiny little demons are still showing up in my cabinets. 😭

So this time, we’re taking a completely different approach: biological control.

I released minute pirate bugs into my plant cabinets with hopes that these little predators can do a better job of hunting down the thrips than I have. They’ll also snack on other small pests, so I’m hoping they can help with the spider mites I’ve spotted here and there, too.

At this point, I’m letting nature fight nature. 😂🌿

Now we wait and see if my tiny army can finally win the war. 🫡

Who else read this in a pirate voice… no one… just me lol.
