The Water You Don’t See
The rain stops. The puddles disappear. The sun comes back out.
But underground, something is still happening.
After days of heavy rain, melting snow, or flooding conditions, the soil around your home becomes saturated. Water begins building pressure beneath the surface, searching for the easiest path to escape.
Groundwater doesn’t always rush in like a broken pipe. Often, it slowly seeps through cracks in foundations, around floor joints, through old brick walls, or underneath basement flooring. What starts as dampness can quickly become standing water, damaged belongings, peeling paint, odors, and mold growth.
And the hardest part?
Many homeowners don’t notice the warning signs until the damage has already spread.
Things to watch for:
✔ Damp basement walls
✔ Musty or earthy smells
✔ Water stains near the floor
✔ Bubbling paint or discoloration
✔ Soft drywall or warped flooring
✔ Sump pumps constantly running
✔ Cracks in foundation walls or floors
Homes near low ground, streams, hillsides, or areas with poor drainage are especially vulnerable during Central New York’s wet spring season.
The storm may be over above ground… but below ground, the water is still moving.
If you notice signs of seepage or flooding, acting quickly can help prevent larger structural and mold issues later on.
