Restoration to a badly damaged desk leather. We are often asked by customers if we can replace the leather, and the answer is yes…but, if the leather is original to the piece and it is decorative and not used on a daily basis, there is an awful lot that can be restored vs replaced.

Sheraton etagere, ca 1810….sort of a “reverse” aging mark. Something sat on the top for a long time and the surface around it aged and darkened and it did not. In this case, because the surrounding surface has become so beautifully aged, we actually want to age the center portion, rather than clean or refinish. More difficult to do this way.l as we have to recreate color and texture, but the results are excellent!

A very nice Rhode Island Chippendale side chair, mahogany with poplar blocking, ca 1760. The seat rails suffered extensive damage due to being improperly upholstered over the rails. The proper setup is a framed and upholstered slip seat that sits inside the rail moldings. We stabilized and rebuilt the tops of the rails and moldings, filled all the upholstery tack hole damage, then meticulously colored, grained, and blended the restorations into the old shellac finish. We then built a new frame seat and had it upholstered in white muslin.

A walnut towel rack we made for a designer client. We cut 2 1/4” square quarter sawn walnut stock, and kept everything constant throughout for a streamlined modern look. The finish is Ciranova Hardwax oil that will stand up to decades of wet towels.

Oil on Canvas, J.R. Nicholysen, 19th Century, measuring 41”x55”. Came to us for frame restoration as well as cleaning. The paint is in excellent condition, but was covered with layers and layers of yellowing varnish. By removing the layers of varnish and cleaning the original paint we can bring the vibrancy and colors back to life. The third photo shows the contrast between the half on the right (cleaned) and the left (old varnish).
There are several interesting artist “flexes” in this painting. The first is not one, or two, but four hands. Hands were considered some of the most difficult things to paint. The biggest flex though, is the “painting within a painting”!

Here’s something we haven’t done in a while…fabricate a missing upper bonnet and replace all the fabric backed fretwork on an 18th century Dutch Tallcase clock. A very tall order indeed (pun sort of intended) but I’m pretty happy with it. The new fretwork is walnut, backed with a fine satin chosen by the designer. The upper bonnet is poplar, veneered in burl walnut veneer, meticulously colored, aged, and finished to match the lower bonnet and case.

Fun fact, one of the hats John wears is that of a wildland fire 🔥 pilot 👨‍✈️ for the South Carolina Forestry Commission. The spring is generally the highest wildfire season in SC as the forests dry out and the wind picks up. Please bear with us as our schedule may be a bit erratic!

A custom pair of walnut cylinder tables we made for one of our designers, shipping out to NY. They are pretty big examples, at 38” across and 28” high, making it impossible to veneer with one piece of walnut, so we used multiple sequenced and matched pieces from the same cut, so that both tables match perfectly.
