"How much does it cost to clear land?"

That is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer is that it depends.

The size of the property plays a big part. So does how thick the brush and cedar are and how big the trees have gotten. What you want the land to look like when we are done matters too. Some folks want it cleared down to bare ground. Others want to keep certain trees standing.

That is why we come out and look at the property before we give a price. Every piece of land is different. Your quote should be too.

Tank Talk Thursday

What a clay core is and why the dam gets built in compacted lifts.

A dam is only as good as what is packed inside it. The clay core is a dense band of clay built through the center of the dam, and its job is simple. Stop water from finding a way through. Dirt that is just piled up and shaped will settle over time and leave gaps where water can travel.

That is why we build in compacted lifts, laying down one layer, compacting it, then adding the next. Each pass gets packed tight before we move on. It takes more time than just pushing dirt into a pile, but it is the difference between a tank that holds water for years and one that gives you trouble down the road.

Dirt Talk Tuesday

A good road starts with what you can't see. Most people notice the surface first. What actually keeps a road in shape is how the water moves off of it.

A road needs a slight crown in the middle so rain runs off to the sides instead of sitting on top. It also needs ditches along the edges to carry that water away. Skip either one and the road starts washing out and rutting up after every good rain.

That is why we look at drainage first when we build or repair a road. Get the water right and the road will last.

Move Dirt Monday

Rain might slow down the dirt work, but it doesn't slow down the Koether boys.

This is what they did on a rainy day. It's a very large, custom built brush rake that will attach to a dozer. Not a bad way to spend a day off the job site. It isn't finished yet, so stay tuned to see the final product!

Can you fix a tank that still has water in it or do you have to drain it?

That really depends on what the issue is. A few smaller fixes can sometimes get done with water still in the tank. Dams are honestly the same way. You don't always have to drain a tank to fix the dam.

It is not the answer everybody wants, but a dam fixed the right way is going to hold up a whole lot longer than one patched.

Tank Talk Thursday

Why an old tank silts in and what a cleanout involves.

Tanks silt in slowly, year after year, and most people do not notice until the water is not holding like it used to.

Every rain brings a little bit of dirt off the surrounding ground and into the tank, and that dirt has to go somewhere. It settles on the bottom and just keeps piling up over the years. Eventually a tank that used to run deep is running shallow, and a shallow tank does not hold water near as well.

A cleanout is going back in and pulling that buildup out, getting the tank back down to the depth it needs to actually do its job. It is one of those things that is easy to put off, but it makes a real difference once it is done.

Dirt Talk Tuesday

One of the kids had a good question for Charles. How does that claw thing help the bucket?

Charles gave it to them straight. It does not really help with digging. If you are grabbing a tree though, it makes it so the tree will not slip off.

Different job, different tool. That is a lot of what running this equipment comes down to.
