Deciphering floor deflection in multifamily design can be challenging.

Where a problem appears is not necessarily where it began. A finished floor may be one of the first places a building performance problem becomes visible.

Cracking, movement, premature wear, or other changes naturally draw attention to the flooring or underlayment. But building performance, safety, and comfort start with structural decisions. Deflection criteria influence how building systems behave over time and affect one another.

The floor assembly is one of many nonstructural elements within the larger, interconnected building system.
